A great way to get the dog to ingest these is to peirce them and squeeze on to the front paws for lots of lickety licking (on the top not the pads....)x |

Thanks Tafia. Dolly seems to have a skin problem with flea dust etc as back in October she gnawed all the fur off her back and i frontlined her and this worked. She's now gnawing her belly and underside of her legs raw so i've washed all the bedding and i frontlined her Sunday night but she reacted badly to it (frothing at the mouth, running around the house as if trying to get away from the smell etc) and it really scared me. They are fed a raw diet so what would you recommend as the best thing to give her. They have home made tuna treats which have garlic in them (although it wouldn't equate to much). |

Well if it where me, I'd probably be tempted to try all of the suggestion's in the original post, bar the Brewer's Yeast. Can't remember whether I mentioned Grapefruit Seed Extract, it's hugely recommended to help boost the immune system. I'll have a further search through my books this evening and will ask a Homeopath friend whether she has any further suggestions. She's not an animal homeopath but she's given me some great input over the years - I'm seeing her tomorrow night. If Dolly's skin is inflamed at the moment you could try a compress of some sort to relieve it , something like Dillweed or bath the area in Marigold Head Tea. Alternatively and easier to source - witchhazel. Gone back and reread you post. I'd go to your local health food store and buy some dried marigold heads (enough to make a bath) - run hot bath, add marigold heads, wait to cool and then gentlly bath Dolly in it. If it's going to work, it'll be pretty instant. And I'd definitely use the Witchhazel. Edited by Tafia, Mar 10 2009, 02:30 PM.

Ah thanx hun - i don't want to put too much directly on her skin at the mo as where she's been gnawing/scratching she's broken the skin - i've just been dabbing it with cotton wool soaked in cooled boiled salty water. The problem with Dolly is that she's a drama queen / hypercondriac and as soon as i do anything too her she milks it for about a week and hides under the bed/runs away from me etc - she a na-na!!

Dawnie the Marigold Head Tea will sooth the skin, discourage any organisms from the area whilst about it and encourage healing - it's fantastic. The reason I came across it was when Boo had an attack of psoriasis (sp). She gnawed her chest raw and rather than going to the vet and be perscribed steriods, I visited an Apcoathary and took their advise on how to sooth red, broken skin. Her two suggestions where a Marigold Tea Bath or a Dillweed Compress. Neither will irriate the skin - after all one of the main compenents of Calendula (sp?) cream is marigold. Can't recommend it enough. Salt water is brilliant for healing skin, but it dehydrates it adds to the irritation. |

Well, on a friends advice (she runs a rescue centre) Dolly has been having half a piriton tablet a day for the last 5 days. On Saturday after much hunting i finally found some dried Marigold leaves and made a marigold tea with that - i then soaked cotton wool in it and dabbed it on her stomach - it appears to be a lot better and not as red or angry - thanks for your help. |

Oh I am glad she's healing. The Marigold Heads aren't the easiest thing to find I know, but at least when you do find them, they're remarkably cheap! |

Mine cost £2.99 and i think its a 500g bag - am more than happy to get some for anyone the next time i'm in the city if anyone wants any. He said to use 2 tsps if making marigold tea so i made a mixture up like that and have put in a jug and just soaked the cotton wool in it. Gonna try leaving the Piriton off now. |

Sorry for bringing back such an old thread but I find it's content very interesting, so can't resist it  My partner works in natural health as a homeopath and over the years it has rubbed off on me and now I too have quite an alternative approach to things. I read with great interest all of the aforementioned remedies. I couldn't see anything about neem oil. This is use regular on all my dogs and wouldn't be without it. It is very helpful for numerous problems our dogs are subject to. Coupled with a healthy diet I rarely get problems and when i do i just shampoo them with a neem shampoo. You can get commercial ones and sprays too. Instead of spraying i just get a tiny amount of raw neem oil and lightly massage it over the dogs coat into the skin. Makes them nice and shiney too. Here is a link to more info on neem: Neem oil |

That's sounds wonderful! Stands to reason that Marigold would work well being a soothant & antiinflamatory, I knew it could be used internally but hadn't thought about it for something like kc. Ta! |
