I've had real difficulties cutting Archie's nails since I had him - no amount of coaxing and treating would get him to let me clip his claws. He'd be terrible if the vet tried too, and me restraining him would only add to the stress.

Over the last few weeks I've been using an ordinary emery board and he's tolerated this really well but as you can imagine its taking days to take millimetres off

I ended up ordering one of these Pet Nail Trimmer as it was pretty cheap and I thought I'd give it a go. It is so quiet Archie didn't flinch at all, and its a bit quicker than the nail file! I'm not sure if this bit of kit will last for years - I've heard of people using dremel type filers so next time I know I can splash out on one of them knowing it will be worth it.

Even if I did manage to get him used to clipping I hate doing it - something about the sound I think  Hopefully he'll have nice tidy nails soon! If anyone else's dog is the same with clippers I'd definitely recommend something like this.

Ohh like the look of that Claire, Pete's nails are really long but impossible to cut much because the pink bit goes a long way down so I can't
take much off for fear of making them bleed. Maggie has lovely short delicate nails which don't seem to grow much at all. Would love to have a go with this bit of equipment on Pete's nails though!!! Does Archie sit still while you are doing it and does it take long to file each nail down to the correct length?

I do it while he's lounging on his back on the sofa - that way he is more relaxed! It does take a little time to do each one, but as his nails are a bit over long that's not a bad thing - sometimes the quick can grow right down and only by trimming a little and often can you get it to retreat.

I've taken the easy route - I'm off to the vet in 15 minutes to have my dogs' nails clipped. They accept their fate and protest less with a stranger than they do with me.

Rudi will tolerate some clipping by me. Abby is a pain in the you-know-what. I bought a Dremel and tried using it on Abby, but she will not keep her nose away from the wheel. I have a grooming table with a loop - but I am too lazy to drag it out.

I have used a Dremel in the past and it did work great though.

It took me months to get Toby used to me cutting his nails. I would literally do one nail a night with lots and lots of treats afterwards. We then progressed onto 2 nails a night and so on and so forth until he would let me do a foot before getting a treat. I got Buffy used to me cutting her nails right from an early age, she will sit quite happily.

I bought a dremel type contraption a month or so ago and I've been getting both dogs used to the noise. I just have to try and work out which attachment to use now

Have never needed to cut Daisy or Duncan's - but I'd be off to the vet if I did. The vet nurses do all this type of treatment - also tick removal, anal glands, weighing etc so don't need to make an appointment.

I used to do that too Lynne - had a great vet who could do Archie's without Archie noticing. Then he left and the vet nurs really botched it :yikes:

My current vet said he would only take a tiny bit off at a time if he clipped them and if Archie was ok with the file I was better off doing that.

my two let me do theirs last night without protest, but I have been doing Jem's for almost 2 years and it's a first, she usually protests! (and nips my fingers.) At night when they are sleepy and lounging around seems to be best. my clipper is a guillotine type, i'm lucky you can see the veins in their nails easy being white.
Does anyone else find their dog's front paw nails need cutting more often than the back? xx

I use a Dremel on mine and other people dogs nails. It is quick easy and especially good for olderdogs who's nails have one a bit thick.

You can get shorter as there is no squeezing of the nail so no pressure on the quick.

Because of Rascal's foot condition his nails grows a lot quicker than normal and are also a lot thicker than normal, also they are black which doesn't help :err:

But luckily I had started him getting used to his nails being trimmed from a puppy. I started with taking the smallest bit off and giving him a treat, and also did it at night when he is more tired out and chilled, and used high value rewards. So now he's pretty used to it and although not particularly pleased to get it done, will let me clip them while my husband holds him and gives him a treat after each nail. Without the treats there would no chance what so ever of him putting up with us doing it. :D

ive always used nail clippers in the past and all my dogs have their nails done from birth so they are used to it.still i always had some owners who would bring their dogs to me for nail clipping well into their adult years as they were too scared to do it themselves and the dogs knew it so they played up.they never played me up as they knew i wouldnt stand for any nonsense and that the quieter they were the quicker it was done.ive never cut intot he quick as its easy to feel the quick as the inside of the nail starts to egt softer if you feel it woth your own nail and its hard to see it in dogs with black nails and for years i had dobermanns so im used ot cli[pping black nails.we used to sell dremels in our tool shops and one day i had the thought of using it instead of an engineers file which id use after clipping to smooth the nail off.the first few times i tried it the dogs were very reluctant but with rewards and persistence they got used to them and i have to say its so easy to use and so much better than a pair of clippers and file so i use it all the time now ;)

Maya & I just had a session with my Dremel & a sanding drum....the last session with the clippers left me a bit drained, she yelped once then.

The Dremel's great! :yay: did all her front nails while she supervised  a few treats & voila!

The back nails are a bit iffy as she can't watch & play "foreman" but the nice thing about the Dremel is that
when I get close to the quick she lets me know....the heat I suppose, but we'll do the rears in time!

Just edited to say that after a 10 minute break we did the rear nails, :yippee: a little less thorough but no less a victory, in time she'll sleep though it all... :crossedfingers:

Yes, I tried the dremel with my welsh terrier once....her bared teeth were something to behold!
Couldn't get within 10 feet of that one with power tools after, so was reluctant to try with the Airedale,
but my good natured "Dopey Dora" took it all in stride, bless her heart!
