Does anyone on here groom their own dog/s? I would like to do all of mine as it can work out pretty expensive for 4 terriers at £30.00 a time and they are normally all done at once and also done twice a year. I've seen some kits advertised, but not sure if i would actually be able to do it myself, some of them have DVD guides to watch etc but i'm not sure.....i guess i'm worried i'll cut them too short or wonky and they'll look a mess...  so far i've seen these... http://www.amazon.co.uk/WAHL-USA-Multi-cut...r/dp/B000ML9HK6 http://www.beststuff.co.uk/pet_clippers.htm (the one for £22.99) http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/s...P&storeId=10001 http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/s...P&storeId=10001 http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/s...P&storeId=10001 does anyone have any of these and what do you think is the best value for money ? thanks :) |

To be honest I don't, not very useful sorry as we take Paddy to the groomer's and it costs £24 every 6 months or so. Looking at the pictures the Argos kits look good for the money, but I wouldn't take my word for it as I am no expert in the doggie hair dept. :D |

I've "groomed" (not really the word for it) a friend's elderly Cairn using 16" Mars Coat King and a decent pair of scissors. More of the coat king than the scissors and even with not knowing a great deal about either grooming or the subtle nuances of a Cairn trim she looked really pretty good and went on the win Veteran later that week at the local fun dog show. Clippers take getting used to, it'sy easy to take hair off where you'd meant to leave it, especially in the early days - the coat king is much more forgiving. Best money I ever invested on grooming tools was the table arm, it's been worth it weight in gold and leaves both hand free. |

Hi Sam I bought a Whal set through canine capers last year - about £25 which looks similar to your first link. It has the DVD which I watched which was very informative. I was incredibly nervous doing Peggy the first time, and started with a fairly long cut, then gradually worked it shorter as I got more confident. Only got a few lines my first time, but otherwise I didnt do too badly! Had to use the scissors more than I expected, but it depends really what you are after. Peggy ended up a no.1 all over to match her operation square :D but next time i'll keep her at around no.3 as prefer her slightly longer. Found them very easy to use, Peggy wasnt scared, and hardest thing was keeping her in the right place - so a table arm is the next purchase!!! If you are prepared to maybe the first time have a few wonky spots and uneven lines, then i'd go for it as it does make a huge saving. With your lot, you'd prob be a pro by the time you got to the last one!!! I've never heard of the Coat King so would be interested to see how that works! Lorns x |

  I must admit I do love the scruffy look - I do brush though Jess's coat a couple of times a week, she usually shakes the minute I finish which leaves her looking as she did before I started ;) |

It's a sort of bladed rake, the length of coat taken off is determined by the number of blades per inch. Having taken advise from other Ciarn owners my friend bought the 16" and generally costs about £20. I was so impressed I bought one to use on my dogs - my experience has been different to many folks in that it hasn't made their coats loose texture, if anything it's improved! Another good buy is a rubber car mat like the ones you find in cars to stand the dogs on, it gives good grip. |

If you or your pet shop have difficulty in finding a supplier then try hub international - they have always proven themselves to be very reliable in the past. |

Well i've looked online and am now thoroughly confused  ...some say the 12" and some say the 16"....so which one should i use on my cairns ? and this one which is all the essentials for a cairn terrier says 10" (have a look in the stripping section) http://simpsons-online.co.uk/acatalog/cairnterrier.html  :help:    |

Well it's not going to make an enormous difference, certainly not as drastic as with clipper blades anyway! 10" would be leave a longer coat than a 12", with the 16" giving the shortest of the 3 - personal preference I suppose. |

 i did, and they are very good. Am going to tidy up some of the doglets this weekend as they are getting a little long (since their last haircut). It thins out the hair as much as it does cutting it so it definately keeps them looking a bit smarter. |
