Lynne don't use a coat king on Duncan, I used on on Duds and it removed all his undercoat with the long top coat which is not what you want with a BT.

Thanks Paula, what should I use instead,he seems to be feeling the heat and stripping him definitely is painful, may have to take him to be clipped - I know Borders shouldn't but his coat is so thick now.

I clip Duds and his coat comes back fine but with the coat king he had bald bits when he went to be stripped. I would be tempted to get him clipped if his coat wont come out easily.

I went to the groomer twice with Maya & they told me how docile she was, but $75.00 plus tip
So I gave some thought to grooming her myself & buying the clippers, the price of one trip to the groomer.

Two days ago I was in a thrift shop & there I saw a Wahl barber grade electric clipper must've
been 30 years old with 2 combs I asked "how much?" $5.00!! :yippee: SOLD!

Just finished our first session.....played it safe to start, just her saddle & tail but she was good as gold
& she looks awesome

Little Meg got a trim last summer, she wouldn't let me near her with clippers so I asked the groomer for advice and they offered to trim her by hand with thinning scissors for £35 :yikes: Bought the scissors from pet shop for £6 and did it myself! :D she wasn't too traumatised and she looked lovely, you have total control over how long the coat is too because it doesn't just take chunks out like plain scissors.

:yippee: Looking forward to seeing pictures of Maya when her knew Artistic Hair-style is complete.

I take Rascal to the groomers to be hand stripped  (mixture of lazy and not knowing what to do) and its' looking like it needs to be four times a year at £46 a go :ermm: . I did buy the stripping knives at an IT show and do try to keep him tidy inbetween visits to the groomers but would love to go on a course that showed you how to hand strip a dog so that maybe we could make do with only two trips to the groomers a year. Anyone know of any courses in the London area?

hand stripping is an art and its one of those things that the more you do it the better you get.none of the pros i know would dream of using clippers on a terrier as it ruins the coat(show wise)and can sometimes make the work harder.(the hair can grow back at 45% and so wont lie flat)a cheap pair of thinning shears is good you cant make much of a mistake with them and they arent costly.a stripping knife can be fairly cheap and its by far the best way to keep a terrier coat correct in both texture and condition, but not everyone can use them(theyre not a good idea if youve got arthritis or rheumatism)

Maybe you could suggest to the breed club (rjl?) that at one of their fun days they run a grooming demonstration? But the actual stripping isn't hard, it's a matter of just taking a few hairs at a time and just working your way over the body evenly.

Yep breed clubs are a good place for demonstrations - well for BTs anyway.
Pictures of Maya eagerly awaited :P

Here she is in all her glory, I was shy doing her ears, but never was a big fan of the "pig ear" effect anyhow! :P
