A fortnight ago, Dill and I were kidnapped by a crowd of friendly beaters. Actually, we walked past and I jokingly asked if we could join them and they shoved a flag in my hand and adopted us for the day. They even bought me my lunch and drove me home at the end :) Poor me - spending the day surrounded by lovely men and working dogs :P

Anyway, Dill wasn't phased by the gunfire, the flags or the other dogs, although he found it hard to stay quiet when we were just standing in line waiting to start at the beginning of each drive. He loved travelling in the pick-up. I kept him on the lead during the drives, just to be sure he was under control. It was a great exercise in socialising with other people and dogs and learning to focus on me with lots of other exciting stuff going on. I let him off in between drives and he was really good.

We've been invited to come & join them next season, so I now have to get him really steady with birds and used to working close to me. :yippee:

I'm able to drop him when he's running away from me now too, so when it gets a bit drier, we are going to play with the sheep again too.

I've got so much work to do over the summer :yikes: with him though, because I want to make absolutely sure he will drop on the whistle anytime & anywhere. Slowly but surely is the way forward... My ambition is to get his brakes working so well that he will drop even when he's just flushed 2 pheasant and a snipe all at once - as happened today on a farm visit and he was stopped only by a dry stone wall because he still is under the deluded belief that if he launches himself skyward with enough force, he can fly! Stupid dogbot

One of my friends has a patterdale that she takes beating and we are going to have training sessions some evenings now it is getting lighter.

:yippee: We went beating on Saturday!

Dill was off-lead almost all day. I was going to keep him on during the 1st drive, but after about 2 minutes of pushing through the wood, I set him free, put the whistle in my mouth and prayed!!!

Anyway - he was good :) He worked nice and close and actually, didn't do much hunting out a lot of the time, as he was being all pastoral and listening for the whistle, so it looked impressive when he sat & turned & recalled................until on the way to one drive he saw the hare and if a dog could don spandex and start singing 'Waterloo' (as in cup!) :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: He was off!!! However, I was pleased because he came back after only 1 field!

By the last drive, he was getting a bit overwhelmed and I realised he had stopped really listening to the whistle, so he went back on just for the last bit. Afterwards, he found a partridge that the picker-up had missed! I'd just tried to call him back as he's squeezed through the sheep-netting around a wood, but then someone else noticed he'd found the bird!

The funniest thing was when we were walking back to the vehicles along the river bank. It's tidal so things get washed up and Dill found an old football and kept positioning it just in front of everyone, trying to get them to tackle him

I was really pleased with him  apart from the fact that being so tiny, he managed to wriggle under the seat of the pick-up we were riding in and pull out a rather large and rather ancient dog chew. Twice in the night I was woken by really frantic yapping and he shot like a rocket down the garden because his guts were rather poorly

Can't wait to go again :yippee:

I'd love to have seen that in person. I don't think anyone hunts that way here...does anyone know if they do this in the States?

No idea Jodie. I wish we had things like your competitive earth dog and barn hunt type competitions though, they always sound great fun. Have you ever tried it with your rat terriers?
