I am trying to train Scruff to leave cats alone. Seeing as none of my friends will lend me a cat, I took him to a park today that is full of squirrels. My reasoning is that if I can get him to leave a squirrel alone I may have a chance with a cat. Also, he would only run off as far as the nearest tree whereas cat may take him a lot further! I have used training discs with him as advised in the John Fischer books and very successful they have been too. We had a really good morning and although he was off the lead and at times surrounded by as many as half a dozen squirrels, he didn't run off. Every time he went to make a move I said "leave" and rattled my discs. I was quite amazed that he obeyed! I am going to repeat the exercise a couple of times a week. I have been talking to a dog trainer that I meet on some of my walks. He has advised me that the word "leave" isn't growley enough! He has advised me to use a "Ahhhhhhhhhh" sound to command Scruff not to do whatever he is doing as it can be uttered in a growley voice a bit like a dog's growl. Now on Dog Borstal they always use the leave command. Is there any reason for this particular command? Any advantages that I can't see? What commands do you all use to forbid your dogs from doing something? |

Duncan obeys leave - Daisy doesn't obey any command whatsoever when it comes to ignoring food and/or cats  Can see the reasoning behind the Ahhh sound but if the command is said in a sharp clear voice I don't actually think the word matters. |

Harvey knows 'leave' as Zandd says spoken in a firm voice is fine. I also used the disks as Harvey always used to bark like mad when I let him out into the garden, like you I was amazed at how effective they were and how quickly he tuned himself into them, it worked fab for about 6 months, but I got out of the habit of using them and we have since moved house so he is back to his barking ways, as I have dog friendly neighbours who don't mind him barking I haven't re introduced them  I would suggest practising with treats maybe putting them in front of him and using the leave command when he attempts to take them. The cat instinct is a very strong one and I don't think Harvey would take any notice of me saying that in the heat of the moment  Good luck anyway :D |

:yay: you are doing so well with Scruff. I can't really add to the advice already given, except that if you train sit / stand / down and heel so that the dog is expected to continue in that position until either another command, or a release command, like 'okay', you can more or less dispense with stays, waits and leaves. I find this seems to make sense to most dogs and it helps enforce the fact that you are making the decisions. |

Won't be any use to you as it doesn't work, but during the last week my pup had selected hearing I used the command 'come back you little bugger!', didn't work but it can come out quite growley
;)
