Mr Ed is a very smelly dog (West highland Terrier). I wash him every couple of weeks but he still honks. I had some dog deodorant left over from my previous dog but it smells so perfumy. Does anybody know of any shampoo and/or dog deodorant which I can use every couple of weeks to stop him from stinking? |

Is Mr Ed an entire male? This can sometimes cause a male to have a stronger odour than other males! Other wise -[only my thoughts] is washing him every two weeks exacerbating his personal perfume - if left, would it settle down to a more appeasing 'smell'? Never had this problem as our males were neutered and this is only an opinion! ;) |

Hmm its a tricky one! As Lu says the more you wash sometimes the more they end up smelling... or at least the bad smell comes back quicker. Sometimes if a dog has blocked anal glands it can give them a bad overall odour - that or bad teeth - so if its unusual for him it might be worth a once over from your vet. Does he do a lot of swimming in pond water? If he does maybe a rinse and a thorough drying off with a towel would be better than a shampoo. Another alternative I have heard people talk about is odourless baby wipes used as a quick wipe over their coat incase they get any muck on them. |

I would also think every 2 weeks is making him smell worse? I've never bathed either of my two and they don't smell doggy at all  Duncan gets a bit wiffy in summer as he's in the water every day. |

Paddy smelt terrible last week so I washed him a shampoo from Pets At Home and it is their own brand so quite reasonable in price. It is a deodorising shampoo with aloe vera & camomile proven to reduce dog odour. There is a spray aswell which is good. In veterinary supervised trials it is proven to reduce odour in 3-5 days aswell as soothe and maintain the coat. Give it ago and see what you think - Paddy's odour has gone and hasn't returned yet! |

I wash him every couple of weeks just because he does smell; it's just a doggy smell, nothing worse which could indicate an infection. He is entire because when I got him he was about 4 and half to 5 and I had to do a lot of behaviour work. I was told that having him neutered at this stage may not be a good thing. I've bought some deodorising shampoo to see if that helps. He has his annual check up in a couple of weeks so I'll mention it. Quote from my daughter's house when she was dog sitting "Sandy, what on earth is that awful smell?" "Oh it's just my mum's dog!". That's how strong it is! |

As he is a Westie, does he suffer from "Westie Skin"? Hamish does, and he had a definite strong dirty doggy odour when he had a flare up, but now that it's under control he doesn't smell anymore (unless he has bottom troubles  ;) ) A trip to the groomers left him smelling positively rosy :D  |

The more you wash the more you have to wash, I rarely wash my dogs but try to brush them every day. Try one of those ionise brushes, that may help. I do give them a wipe over with none perfume baby wipes sometimes as well. |

I always use the Johnson's Dog Deodorant shampoo, it is a lovely shade of green. When I had my lab I found it was the only shampoo which got rid of the fox poo smell and it works the same on my two little terrors too who luckly don't do the fox poo roll quite as much as the lab  |
