Yesterday, I decided to borrow Tiny the Patterdale and see what happened if I put her on my kitchen table and pulled her hair out. We'd all just had a lovely walk together, where Dill got his revenge on those pesky terrors by leading them up to some rather enticing rabbit holes and then back to me to grass them up when they went in! Tiny was really well-behaved on the table, especially as I don't think she had ever encountered anything like it. I think I know why black Lakies aren't seen much at KC shows - the topcoat and undercoat are both, well, black and you have to feel your way to see where you've been over. The coat stripped really well and she had quite a thick undercoat in most places, although it was thinner on her neck and she had the patch half way up her tail that a lot of Irish have. I cheated a bit with thinning scissors around the bottom of her flanks and scissored under her tummy and round her back end and a bit on her tail. She's got a great invention - smooth ears! So no picking out all that annoying silky ear-hair :) She's fairly smooth around the eyes too with just a hint of a beard, although strangely, the furnishing on her legs is something am exhibitor would kill for - really coarse and dense and just needed the minimal shaping. When all the hair was off, I had a good look at her shape and she's pretty much a black Lakie. It was great when the neck was done and you could see the length and her shoulders. Her head is very much like a working Lakie, maybe with a little dash of something else - maybe not. I've been wanting to get my mits on her for ages - just to see how she scrubs up  What is spring if you can't strip :ph43r: |
