Archie's exploits over the weekend has set me thinking  I can't help feeling that sometimes people get terriers because they are lovely little dogs but can forget their natural instincts.

I'd be interested to know if all the terriers on this board have lived up to their breed traits, or are there any laid back ones that would ignore a small fluffy thing

So far Archie has had a blackbird in the garden and a pheasant out on a walk. He's also picked up a toad but decided pretty quickly that was a bad idea

I'm not advocating setting your dog on the local wildlife or being careless around livestock (Archie is always on a lead around sheep and was onlead when he got his pheasant!). Its made me be extra wary as I'd be very anoyed with myself if he caught a skylark or other ground nesting bird when we are on our moorland walks.

Option of 'non-terrier' voting if you don't own one of these darlings ;) (but unfortunately you can only vote once).

Although Peggy has the instincts to chase (as does Musty) - he cant get there in time, and Peggy just isn't fast enough. I won;t count the time she caught a rabbit with Mixi as it couldnt really move and all she did was pick it up and carry it around (very gently!!) and keep barking at me to 'come see!!!'

I'm not sure she would know what to do with one if she did catch it! I know she shakes her toys but not sure about the real thing.

I have to vote no, but I own a terrior. Jess has never [yet] caught anything although she has come pretty close. She's always on the look-out for Squirrels and Rats - you'll all hear about when/if she does!

razzles not caught anything yet but its not for lack of trying! just think shes too fat to catch anything even a bunny with mixi!she chases squirrels and rabbits in the woods all the time but shes just not fast enough with her short little legs. now my shibas are another matter. ;) ive watched one of them jump from a standstill and pluck a pigeon out of the sky as it flew past. :woohoo: my old manchester terriers were excellent ratters too.best and quickest ive ever seen.

Yes - both have caught rabbits.Daisy has caught several rats and a wood pigeon  which to her disgust I made her drop leaving her spitting out feathers  Zico my yorkie was very good at squirrel catching (which didn't go down terribly well with the tourists in Kensington Gardens ) The Ds caught a squirrel in Oxford University Park - both at the same time so not sure who gets the credit for that one. I don't encourage them to hunt but am certainly not going to keep them on-lead because they have done so.

Not yet, but only 7 months and does chase. He has quite happily eaten two dead frogs , he chases pigeons and does stalk them, and has got into squirrel chasing the last month after watching a 'pro' smooth fox terrier  and was soon copying.

We spent the weekend in the country and he loved running through the fields of corn ousting pheasants. Don't know what he'd do if he caught one yet, as still a puppy and not yet fast and skillfull enough, but learning quickly.

He met sheep at the weekend and looked but not interested, didn't look like fun. :) :phew: .

I do have a terrier, but it was my hound who caught something - she grabbed one of my son's rabbits after it escaped from its hutch. Poor rabbit didn't have the instinct to run - must have thought it was save inside its run. :( It died later, although I did get Beauty to let it go straight away).

I don't think Fred notices live animals, although they did both go after a young cat in the garden once - Beauty knocked it off the fence as it climbed and they both went bonkers. He could have been reacting to Beauty's excitment though! Luckily I got the dogs away and the cat found a hidey hole so I could get the neighbour to come collect her cat!

A rat ran across our path near a stream recently, I think Fred pretended that as he was behind me he didn't see it!

Jack Dog - a Patterdale is always hunting. Has caught quite a few things, but his favourite hobby is digging for moles, often catching them :D

Brandy is the least hunting type of terrier I know! She isnt interested at all, the only thing she likes the chase are tennis balls, joggers ankles and the odd cyclist!

 Molly is a rubbish Patterdale and an embarrassment to her breed  She has sat and watched foxes, casually glances at bunnies and only gets excited over the cat when Snow has wound himself up to breaking point. As Snow’s bum disappears down a hole she gallops past thinking 'what is he doing silly boy'

I am really relived actually as I would hate for them to get anything as I had to deal with this when Winnie and Max were around and it was hideous to try and deal with a half dead deer

Dudley has caught 1 rabbit, to my knowledge but there may have been more, and like Archie enjoys digging up mole hills as does Thomas who just like having a muddy nose I think.

Harvey is hopeless  That time we had a rat in the garden he would dash out to the bush and stick his head in, by the time he looked back up they were well gone  He has no interest in the guinea pig either, bless him.

Bruce, Holly and Newt are all proven rat catchers....Jake has not caught anything (to my knowledge)
Bruce will also chase anything small and furry (he especially hates cats!)

Hari the pariah found and destroyed a rat's nest when she was still very young and was also good with 2inch flying cockroaches and big hairy spiders. She always fancied a go at the mongoose but thankfully was too slow (She was much smaller than it at the time).

and now she is now on a mission to hunt and catch a bumble bee - something she'll only do the once methinks  (also on her hit list are bats, cats, pigeons seagulls, crows, squirrels, rabbits and moles)
