Hi , just wanted to know if anyone had any info on teething problems with their pups, like how long does it last and is there anything apart from giving them chews to help aleviate the problem? Harry is nearly 5 months old and he tries to chew and grab everything at the minute. I make sure he has a rawhide chew each day to use,i never leave him alone with it for fear of him choking, but he seems to much prefer our various body parts like fingers, toes, ankles and anything else he can get, lol. He seems to be a bit hyper during the day and barking at passing cars and people, but not everycar or person. Does anyone have any ideas how i can stop his barking ,its cute now and people think its fun but when he's bigger it wont be so funny. Sorry for the long post but haven't been able to look these things up for a while , i've had my young neice staying over, that makes a 9yr old and a 5yr old. Driving me nuts, Harry takes it in his stride and sleeps in his cage were thy arent allowed. |

:o I remember it so well! There are several things you can do to help but first and foremost you'll have to stop the biting! A short sharp no, a squeal of pain - anything that makes him realise that to bite flesh is definately a 'No-no' Chews are great but what also helps - anything really cold. One suggestion tried and tested here was an old wet face cloth frozen. They can gnaw on that to their hearts content. You can buy puppy teething rings from most pet shops which can help. Honestly cold things are great. |

Kong makes a special teething toy for pups. Comes with some sort of flavouring you add to it. Yum! |

Teething is hell for everyone - pup and owner alike! Little devils are completely obsessed about trying to reduce heat/discomfort from their mouth's, it upset's their tummies, ear set, unable to concentrate on anything poor things. Best thing you can say about teething is that it does come to an end! Both Lu's suggestion's are great. Tie the facecloth in a knot before you freeze it - gives pup something more to sork on and keep two on the go. If you use the "Ouch" consistently it works very quickly and stays with them for life, still stops my two at 5 and 7 years from doing a variety of things even today! Barking can be a real problem, he might come from a particularly noisy line of dogs, maybe understimulated or even over stimulated difficult to know from your post. But either way getting him to practise calm, controlled behaviour throughout his normal day should help. Not all the time of course, he's a pup and should be allowed to kick up his heels but I found tuggies especially good for this. You control the tempo, fast and fun, slow it down and controlled. Try little training exercises whilst you're on your walk, reward with something yummy, something way more satisfying than barking at cars or people and encourage his focus towards you at trigger times. Pups are cute but it's all one step forward, two backwards - actually the best thing I can say about them is they eventually become dogs! |

:) Hi, just wanted to say thanks to all those who replied. I've come to the conclusion that Harry was getting to excited when the kids are around because they fuss round him to much. Firstly i tried the frozen cloth trick and he seemed to like it., He's also lost his first tooth which coincidentally is the same place my 5 yr old just lost hers so she is delighted bacause they're the same. Been doing the distraction thing when out walking and he is much better, doesnt do it quite so much, i've taken the time of making sure he's calm before we go ut which does make a difference, something i didnt always do before  . Its amazing the difference in his behaviour in a week, i need to be much more consistent with him. when its just me and him at home he behaves perfectly. He's beginning to grow his beard which is so cute. Sorry this is so long but i've not had the time to add it all gradually. |

Glad that you're feeling happier! Believe me everyone feels like they're banging their heads against a brick wall when they're little! |

I'm sure Harry has gotten through his teething worries now and hope that his walking etc is much better and quieter now  I found very cold carrots an absolute godsend when both Maddie and Kira were teething. They are cheaper than the freezable puppy toys and they are tasty and can be used as part of their diet. I absolutely panicked when Maddie's first tooth came out because I thought she had hurt herself  I didn't realise they lost their toothiepegs too  |
