Just thought I'd let you know that Fred is entering the KCGC Special Pre-beginner Competition Stakes in July.
:D It's his first proper Open Show. Ages to go yet, but I am so excited! Tomorrow night he is having an assessment and induction into a new training club so that we can start work on his Silver Good Citizen award, and in the meantime our next obedience comp is on 1st June at Waltham Abbey. Their rules say that as he won a place in Starters at another show he has to go into Hopefuls which he doesn't have much chance at, but the practice is good for both of us. |

He did it (some time ago now) but failed because he bit me when I had to examine his paws. Oh well. Another time maybe! He's trying for his Silver Good Citizen award later this month, but I'm pretty sure he's going to fail that as well for the same reason. We have been working on it, and he's better but of course for the Silver the examiner has to do the examing, so it's still a worrying exercise. Shame to fail it just for tha, but never mind! Oh what a shame, so many dogs hate having their paws touched and I wondering whether this has anything to do with Fred's HD? Perhaps now he's on the meds he's not going to be as sensitive - keep my finger crossed for you both anyway. |

We think now that it might be - if joints are aching all the time I don't suppose I'd want to be touched - although when I first had him he wouldn't let us touch his front paws either. It's taken a year of careful handling to get him to let me hold his front paws, and offer them for a 'touch' and 'tap', but I don't think I'd be able to look and help out if he was hurt like I can with my greyhound. A friend of mine who has Norwich Terriers taught me not to just touch his legs, but to run my hand down his back and carry onto the paws. I've been practicing this with Fred every time he wants a fuss, and if he's jumping all over someone else I ask them to do it to - no grabbing or real 'touching' just a stroke and it's already having an effect. |

His test is on the 26th. :) Practising touching him is going well, but as he can't get out due to his hip dysplasia for another week it's difficult to find other people to touch him - then we need to work towards strangers doing it. Not much time left, but fingers crossed. Edited by Linda & Fred, Oct 9 2008, 08:38 AM.

He passed! I told the examiner about his HD so he was more careful, and he wasn't trying to lift paws up anyway. Woohoo! |

I was very happy - did I mention the amount of GSDs and other 'working' type dogs that were also there? The only other terrier there was a yorkie and it didn't move off its owners lap all day! Tomorrow a photographer from the local paper is coming to take our photo, and my dad with his dog. We are hoping for a plug for our small businesses, but always nice to get in the paper! I've just started another thread about Fred in behaviour, so possibly it will seem we haven't come that far after all.. Edited by Linda & Fred, Nov 4 2008, 10:54 PM.
