I hope folk don't take offense but a couple of time this week I've read about covering ticks with vaseline etc. Yes it's true that it does kill the tick but unfortunately does so by sufferocation. Now before you think I've gone totally off my rocker and joined Animal Rights for Ticks basically what happens is that the tick reguritates into the hosts blood stream - and being one of the major carriers of Lyme Disease which dogs can get in exactly the same way as humans, this is to be avoided at all costs. So is you do find a tick, don't panic the article attached says that an infected tick has to be attached to the body for over 48 to pass an infectious disease. If you've not got a tick remover at hand, please take your dog to the vet and ask him/her to remove it instead. We've only just started to be aware of Lyme Disease in this country and it really is serious, especially as it's quite likely to be misdiagnosed. Article Edited by Tafia, Jul 2 2008, 01:52 PM.

I use a flea zapper on my dogs, it also kills ticks. This is the one I have, if you scroll down you will see the flea zapper. http://www.puddlepetcare.co.uk/acatalog/dog_grooming.html |

Thanks for this Tafia, I have noticed one on Brandy, but I am a bit worried as she is still so hairy (even after her clip) what if you dont find them?! She has been frontlined but still seems to have picked them up! Will go remove this one now tho....hadnt done it yet as I thought it would drop off as front line would do something....! |

Please don't panic! The likelihood of the tick in question carrying Lyme D. is incredibly low - especially so if you've not been in an area populated by deer. Even if you have been it's still no reason to panic - just don't smother the tick with vaseline/burn it with a fag/or use nail varnish on it! |

I am panicking now, I just read the front line package, and it said that they should drop off within 48 hours, well its been 48 hours one has drpped off and the other was still there, so i did as it said and got some tweezers, pulled it, and some came off, pulled again and another bit came off etc and now i think the head is still there and all around the tick is all read where i tried to pull it out :( I have smothered the red bit in tea tree stuff, but I think the head is still there......?! I dunno what I did wrong, I front line, tweezed as it said etc.....! Should I worry its still in her? |

Nic, I can imagine exactly how much you're panicking right now but really don't! It's highly unlikely that Brandy is at any risk at all from anything at all - you've followed the instructions to the letter and as far as I'm aware Devon is not a cluster area. Please don't let yourself get all het up - Brand's a healthy, active, lovely dog with a very caring owner - and I'm willing to bet good money that she's not at risk in the slightest! (.... and you've absolutely no idea what a skinflint I am with the folding stuff!) |

 Thanks Tafia, I was lets say VERY panicked yest, I am glad to read you dont think it will do any harm to Brands if the head is still in, I do panic a lot! But I also have bad luck, She once had a tick, first one I saw on her, and I didnt panic, got a tick remover, couldnt get it out properly, didnt think much of it, then she started shaking, being sick and had a look where the tick was and it went all yuck and covered in puss, so I started crying as I do whenever I panic, and got bf to ring the vet at about 11pm and he said not to worry, bring her in the next day which I did and they said it just got infected! So now whenever she has a tick I make sure I follow step by step what I should do, which I did yest and then when the head got stuck in again I just thought agghhhh noooooo not again, panic!! So thanks for your re-assurance, I need it! I am not like this with my ponies, I am a tough owner, but my lil dog, I am a wuss!!! |

Perhaps Nic, you could suggest to your boyfriend that he could stock a few of the lever tick removers in his shop? They are the only sort that is recommended by the Lyme charities for removing ticks because they sort of manage to scope the head out along with the body. I'm sure Brandy will be fine, but as with all things, just keep an eye on the area. And talk about panic, you should see me sometimes, a real headless chicken! I was another one with no idea about what happened if you used vaseline Lu. Or burning, zapping etc - it was only through an American email group (where Lyme is a much greater risk than here) that I found out. |

I bought a tick twister when Archie arrived but I haven't had the chance to use it yet :( I feel like I'm missing out  He must taste really bad :ermm: I've seen people recommend a fag end before :yikes: there's no way I'd go anywhere near my dog with one, tick or not! |

If using tweezers to take a tick out you should get hold of it then twist it anti clockwise. |

I'm just pinned this thread as I think it's going to be very relevant as the summer progresses. |

I also think it's important that someone points out you should check it is definitely a tick before you try to remove it, not your dogs nipple... like someone I know  *cough*PAULA*cough* :D |
