Sorry if Im being a little slow but Ive just read the excellant thread on stripping borders and had a few more questions in relation to welshies. In the past we always had holly stripped at her breeders a few times a year - we would take her in looking like a big black bear and when finished she would have no wirey fur at all - just her grey undercoat. As she got older we decided to clip her because she has allergic skin disease and we find it easier to manage to keep it short all year round. We have always striped robbie ourselves. My mum has just got a new welsh terrier puppy - Alice - and is keen to strip her herself. We assumed that holly's haircut always had to be so dramatic as it was only being done a few times a year and once the coat is long and past the point of no return it all has to come out. Ideally we would like to keep alices coat of a medium length all year. All the resources we have found seem to be about grooming for the show ring which isnt really the aim. At the moment she is only 14wks and looks like a strange badger cross bog brush with what I call puppy feather but her tight wirey coat is starting to come through. At what age and stage of coat do we need to start stripping her? After that can we just continue to pull the coat as and when like we do with robbie? Sorry for the long post, ill reward all those who read it with some cute photos! |

Firstly, you absolutely have to post photographs of Alice because there is no cuter pup in the world than a Welsh Terrier! And certain nosy parkers (me) would be interested to know where she's from and possibly her breeding! I'm no expert of hand stripping but if you want to keep Alice's coat at a medium length that's easy enough to do - get yourselves a medium stripping knife and just keep on top of it - say about once or twice a month. Whilst Alice is sleeping on your lap just take her puppy coat gentley between your fingers and lightly pull it out. It comes away very easily. |

Another alternative is a no 16 Mars Coat King - use it once a week in the same way you'd use a brush. I use it on both my dogs and unlike other peoples experience I've experienced no loss of coat texture at all. |

Thank you, I thought youd be the person to ask! As soon as I can ill get some photos up. Her KC name is sonorra treasure trove, her dad is saredon die hard and her mum sonorra making mischeif. I even spotted saredon forever young far back in her lineage, but it isnt that imprtant to us really as she is just going to be a pet. Her mum had a lovely nature which was important and so far she has been such a lovely puppy. I think it helps that she has so many other dogs around to keep her company. Ill look up the coat king - im guessing it just pulls out the top hairs? photos to follow i promise :yay: |

I don't think there's a Welsh Terrier in the country that doesn't have Saradon Forever Young somewhere in their pedigree! The Coat King mostly just pulls out any hair that's ready to come out, it does cut some but no more than say a Mikki stripping knife. You'll not get a particularly tidy finish with it so for glamour, go over with the knife. There will be times when for no seemingly explicable reason, the coat will just blow but it depends on the inidividual dog. I've managed to keep both dogs in some semblance of coat for upwards of 12 months, then about 2 months ago put Boo on the table after only about 2 weeks break (and she's had longer breaks than that!) coming through and everything was ready to come off - thank goodness it's meant to be summer otherwise she'd have been wearing a coat until something came through! Looking forward to seeing the photo, the only thing better than a Welsh pup is a mature one! |
