I haven't posted for a while due to one thing and another (mainly a hard drive wipe-out!) but I finally found my way back.

My Fred has just been diagnosed with hip dysplasia.

I haven't heard of a terrier getting this before, just wondered if anyone else had? We're still in the stage of rest and painkillers after overdoing it at a HTM workshop, but in a couple of weeks we will be going back to see the vet to discuss what exercise and activities he will be able to do. As you may imagine it's hard to keep a terrier quiet and peaceful when under house arrest! So we did have a ten minute lead walk today, just to get him out of the house. Hopefully we will be able to carry on training at obedience and some 'ground' HTM (no jumps or on hind legs) as long as the sessions are short - so that's our twice yearly training weekend now cancelled forever. :(

On a positive note - his weight has dropped to 11.5kg (finally!) - last time we were on here he was still 12.5 I think and it was moving incredibly slowly. We were going to continue on to get him down to about 10/10.5 but now he has this diagnsis I will keep going until I can see his ribs. Apparently it's the best thing I can do for his hips, along with keeping his muscle tone good.

Of course you're remembered, nice to see you back but sorry to hear about Fred's HD. It can and does occur in all breeds/types to a greater or lesser degree unfortunately.

Stick around now your hard drive is sorted!

It will be a case of trial and error I suppose!

We are going down to Somerset tomorrow night for my first night in a B&B with my dog (arriving late so less time to be a pain in the backside!) ready for a Tellington Touch session with Sarah Fisher (photographer for new book in attendance, which is exciting!). He usually hates being poked around at the back end, and this is apparently going to fix all that. :yippee:

Now that is going to be seriously interesting, looking forward tohearing your thoughts on TT and whether it has the desired result with Fred.

It's something I've been thinking about for him all year actually - to see if it would help. Knowing it will be people at the top of the field is what finally pushed me to have a go.

I will certainly report back. :)

I LOVE TT! I credit the method with giving us another 12 years on a greyhound mix that we had who injured her back. I went to some TT training and used it on Lilli, and she did a complete turnaround.
Have a wonderful time!

Googled "Hip Dysplaisa in terriers" and was amazed at the breeds that are prone to it - and there was me thinking it was generally a Lab problem! This is the blurb on Westies, but I'm sure you'll have covered these suggestions already:

It was amazing! Fred is normally really unsettled and stressed in a new place, but Sarah had him eating out of her hand (literally!).

She pointed out some signals I'd been missing, so that's really helped and she taught me to go real slow so that he has time to ask me nicely to stop it please without resorting to running off or biting. She wanted to do some groundwork but didn't want to push his hips. We've been invited back in January when they do another photoshoot. She liked him so much she is asking for him to be on the front of the book! :crossedfingers:

He did behave very well, posing for photos like an old professional, although she did make him look very naughty by unstuffing a pillow and making it look as if he'd eaten the sofa!

I've tried to carry on some of the work here, but we didn't get very far as Fred was telling us moving on from the backs of my fingers was too much for him, so although I learned loads about him, I didn't really learn very many touches. I am hoping to build back up, although obviously at home he is more relaxed anyway.

At the B&B he was very good, only barking when someone else came up the stairs. He wasn't supposed to get on the bed, but I put out a blanket and very naughtily let him up on that. He was banned from getting under the duvet though.

This must have been a fascinating experience, I've heard Sarah talk a couple of times on TV and she comes across as a very clear instructor.

And I've got to say I'm not the slightest bit surprised Fred is in the running for cover boy - he's pretty gorgous!

He did so well I contacted an agency this week for him. Had a lovely chat with the owner of four terriers, one is on adverts for KFC that are running currently. Who knows, could be the start of a new career for him?

yes i remember you and Fred too!how sad hes got H.D.is it a bad case or what?does he need an operation?i had dobermanns for many years which are tested for HD as its a defect they can be prone to.we also tested for cervical spondylosis as thats another defect they can get.i know weight is a problem that can make it worse.we always tested and scored our dogs before they became part of our breeding program, and luckily for us we never had any bad scores and never had any cases of HD,but i do know people who have had their labs etc operated on for this problem.
hope the film work starts to come in we can all say we know a film star then! :D

I don't think it's a bad case, but we are seeing the vet next Tuesday who will hopefully give us more info than the nurse I saw when I picked him up from the xray. They said there was no sign of arthritis which is a good thing, I don't think he is bad enough for an op as the signs he has it are still quite subtle. If he hadn't been a grumpy bugger I doubt I would have investigated it to this extent to find out this early on.

I have decided next time to get a dog from a breeder like youself who does all the tests. This is the second time I've had a crossbreed/mongrel that has had some quite shocking health problems! It's a shame to wave goodbye to rescue, but I can't go through this a third time with dogs with unknown makeup.

As for the film work - the woman hasn't even answered the email to show she's got it. Probably worried about competition from my gorgeous Fred. ;)

Oh well done, sounds fascinating, didn't know she was based in Somerset either.Have never tried TT but loads of people who have report very positively. It certainly won't do any harm and that's pretty much my philosophy with most treatments,as long as there are no side effects and it may do some good it's definitely worth trying.
