It's having a good effect, although as yet we can't do it 'properly' most of the time.

When he's over excited I do a few moves and it helps him to calm down.

Having extreme difficulty telling my left from right I'd be struggling with anti clockwise - never mind the 2.25 inch circle 1.5 times!

I don't do the circles! Can't get them right, and Fred wasn't ready for Sarah to show me how to do them, so I am just stroking with the backs of my fingers. The main thing she taught me is that the slower I go the more time Fred has to tell me he's not happy without resorting to his teeth, and it IS working.

Just an update on his weight - he's down to 10.9kg! So happy. Originally that was his target weight (to lose 2kg which he has now done) but it's not really enough so we're going to keep going and see if we can get him to below 10 and then see what he looks like then. It's going much faster now, so hopefully it won't take too long before we can assess again. :yippee: :yay:

Good for you! Saw Sarah Fisher on the news last night (we get local news from the west country as well as Wales) demonstrating on a Bull Terrier x that she's fostering for Battersea, only a very short item but interesting none the less.

Nearly a month to the day and he's down to 10.1 kilos. The nurse wants to see another kilo off and has arranged for us to go back in four weeks. If he looks too skinny we can go back up a bit, but when I look at the ideal weights for the terriers we think he has in him - JRT and Patterdale - they both seem to have an ideal weight of between 5 and 8 kilos so we might need to go carry on for a while even after that. I just hope Fred's ideal weight doesn't turn out to be 6kilos, as that means he was over twice the weight he should have been! He's got quite short legs...

In my defence there is no way I put all that weight on him, he was a bit of a barrel when he came to me, it just took me a shameful year (during which he probably did gain a bit more) to realise he really needed to cut down!

I'd be interested to know what other owners dogs weigh who are around the same height (15 inches to the stop of his back above his front legs). His legs are only one inch longer than his chest!

Don't go too much by the weight for a breed, for example both mine are over the breed standard for Borders by quite a bit.Duncan is fine at his weight, can feel ribs and spine, runs like the wind and doesn't get breathless.Daisy however is overweight  shaped like a barrel despite long walks but she doesn't run 1/10th as much as he does.So judge Fred from his body look and feel rather than what other dogs weigh,he's very active, beware of getting his weight down too low.Not sure what mine measure height wise, will get the tape measure out when they wake up (which will probably be when I get my supper)

Davey's 15 3/4 inches at shoulder and around 10 kilos and he's in pretty hard condition, lots of muscle etc.

Harvey is 16" to the shoulders but is over 12Kg which I feel is too much, aiming for him to get down to 10kg which I think will be right for him.

ooh thank you that gives me a bit of a guide. I think 9kilos will probably be low enough in that case. His ribs are a lot easier to feel now, but still have to put a bit of pressure on.

He's going to be doing some flat agility work from the end of January, so hopefully he will start to put his muscles back on! He's lost it with the restricted exercise and of course I didn't want to start him having lots of offlead or extra work while he was carrying the extra weight. He doesn't seem to be in more pain or stiff after an offlead run about - we stick to 30 mins or so and only throw a toy a few times. He zooms around the garden anyway, jumps off the back of the sofa if he feels like it, so he can't be in that much pain!
