Bit of a yucky one this one!! My Mums dog Arf started rubbing his bum on things, mum worms him up to date and thought nothing of it, however last night he just wasnt comfortable and was doing it loads, so a trip to the vets today told her it was a anal gland blockage and he had to have them cleaned. She is wary now that it could happen again and will be keeping an eye on it, but does anyone know much about this, ie do they get it often, and how can we help prevent it? |

Nic i'm posting a link to an earlier thread on anal glands which might be of some use. Davey suffered badly and ended up with abcesses which is why we started a Barf type diet. |

Hi one of my Borders Jake has to have his anal glands squeezed now & again & his stools are normal, it's just one of those things with him, i always know when they need done as when he's lying next to you the most horrendous smell hits you.....pure rotten fish  i always get the vet to do it because they can become infected, this happened when he was younger but not so much now, the last thing i'd ever do is have them removed as it is the most painful op i remember the vet telling me & it can cause other problems. |

Our old Lab had awful problems with her anal glands and ended up having them removed. She had no problem with the operation whatsoever though and to be quite honest it was the best thing for her as she didn't have to keep making trips to the Vets (which she hated) to have them sorted. |

Had a brief read of the other thread and noticed it mentioned the wheat bran. Kira suffers from her anal glands filling and has them emptied roughly every 3/4 months. It used to be more often until the vet advised giving her bran flakes in her diet to help firm her stools up. Bless her I just reckon she hasn't got a very tight bum clench :ph43r: |

Just back from the vet and asked him to check Daisy as caught a fishy whiff lately and she's been chewing her paws again - apparently that could be a sign there's a problem  .They were a bit full,he emptied them and I'm putting her onto bran again to see if that helps. kimmie good to see you again. You can use Oat Bran instead of Wheat if your dog has a wheat intolerance. |

I was interested to read this as there has been a couple of instances that Bob's bum has smelt a bit fishy. This has only happened twice and gone the next day. Is this something to worry about? Rachel |

Nothing to worry about. All or most dogs smell fishy now and again due to their glands emptying naturally. |

I've never thought about whether Rascal needs his anal glands emptied  , would I know if they ever did? Is the smell that bad? And can you get your dog groomer to empty them, (have heard some people do) or is it better to get the vet/vet nurse to do it? |

Don't panic! The vast majority of dogs have no problem with their anal glands whatsoever - they empty them without any help at all whilst going about their normal lives, barking, pooing, running etc, etc. When Rascal was being stripped, the groomer without doubt, would have checked them and if there has been any need for attention would have mentioned it. The main problem is that some dogs just don't suit modern diets and the glands aren't stimulated on a regular enough basis, a build up happens and they get blocked - but by no means does it affect all dogs. I've one the does and one that doesn't which is why we moved onto a natural diet which cleared the problem up immediately. The other cause is that a very small percentage of dogs naturally have a design fault in the gland leading to a predisposition to blocking. A good groomer is just as able to empty the glands as a vet. It's easy enough to empty them yourself at home albeit, slightly stinky! I've a website somewhere which explain exactly how to do it, I've try and find it if your interested. Found it! anal glands Edited by Tafia, May 4 2009, 12:28 PM.
