I was given this book for Christmas and can't tell you how much I've enjoyed reading it. I've probably read 1,000's of books in my life and it's one of only a handful that I'd universally recommend. It's a lovely quick easy read, the sort of book you can pick up and put down without loosing the plot. Some sentiments are slightly dated for our modern sensibilities but that doesn't detract from the main enjoyment of the book. So if you haven't read it, treat yourself in 2009. And if you don't enjoy it, just don't tell me! Published by Persephone Classics - ISBN 978 1 906462 02 4 Miss Pettigrew is a down-on-her luck, middle-aged governess sent by her employment agency to work for a nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly children. Over a period of 24 hours her life is changed forever. "Over the course of one day, in a series of deft interventions, witty misunderstandings and brilliant repartee, Miss Pettigrew is revealed as a life saver. A delightful, intelligent and naughty novel which reminds us it's never to late to live." 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die Edited by Tafia, Dec 30 2008, 08:00 PM.

Tafia, I've heard this is a great book. I'm sure it's also been made into a movie starring Amy Adams as the title seems very familiar and I think I saw a trailer of it - in which case I'll definitely read the book first; so many books have been spoiled for me by some director failing to translate them sensitively enough!

Can I suggest that you read the book accompanied by a box of truffles for the perfect reading experience? Pam, as I was reading I thought how strange it hadn't been adapted for the screen a long time ago. I would have preferred a British actress for Miss Pettigrew but I can see Frances MacDormand working. |

It's brilliant - I've also heard it on radio four. Just a lovely lovely book - thanks for reminding me of it. |
