If any of you have been reading Fred's blog, you might know he's been pooing in the house a lot lately. I've been walking him more, so he is less likely to be saving it up for night time, or when I'm out, then I got home today to find two wees in my kitchen! I don't know if this is a separation issue, or a physical problem (will be asking the vet next week) but I've decided to get a litter tray for him anyway. Any ideas on how to teach him to use it? I wasn't even out that long today - some days it's 6 hours but this week I've not been so busy and have only been out 3-4 most days. Perhaps it's the frequency of how often I am out, rather than the length of time!? Although the other day I was upstairs having a bath, can't have been out of the room more than 20 minutes and he'd pooed in the dining room. :( I was hoping dog walking I could take him with me every day, but it's not working out so far. |

Absolutely no ideas at all, an adult dog should be more than able to hold themselves for 3-4 hours if they've been given the regular toilet breaks; like you I'd certainly be asking the vet whether he thought it had a physical reason. |

Well, I bought a big litter tray and it's now in the living room with a puppy training pad in it! He wanted to rip it out and kill it, but Beauty had a good sniff! I'm not sure it will work as he only just fits in it, but we'll see! If it doesn't work I'll just have to start leaving the pads on the floor. |

Gah! He peed all over the doormat - right next to a training pad I'd left on the floor. :x: I suppose it was handy to clear up with! |

I'm sure this is nothing new to you, but thought it might worth posting. When Hari came out of quarentine we had to tune her into being house trained again. We did that by taking her outside every 30 mins when she was up and about, and using a crate otherwise (overnight and whenever left alone, I wasn't working then). It was simply a case of using a command word and a treat whenever she did pee/poo. It was a lot of work but very effective. I was wondering if you could do the same using a litter tray instead of the garden. Not sure how a male dog uses a litter tray though  |

He must be squatting indoors, as the puddles are always on the floor, not on walls - up to a few days ago it was mainly poo, so he shouldn't have had a problem. Now I'm making sure he's empty he's weeing instead. :( I'll go back to reinforcing weeing outdoors though I think, treating him after going. He's got a command word for the toilet anyway, as I need it for travelling/camping. Maybe it will help if he's rewarded for it outside! It's getting so I'm getting angry when I come home, and he knows I'm cross. I know it doesn't help, and I don't tell him off, but still, he's not stupid. |

I would imagine that's probably the best way to go about it. It'll be interesting to hear what the vet says about whether it's a physical problem - if he was entire you'd probably automatically wonder whether he'd got an enlarged prostate - but Fred's neutured isn't he? |

Yes. If it was just poop I'd be thinking along the lines of - maybe it hurts to squat so he is leaving it until he can't wait any longer and if I'm not around to let him out he's got to go, but he's got no such problems having a wee. I've emailed his behaviourist as well, to see if it's something he's come across. Probably have to wait a week for a reply, but ho hum, he's a busy guy! |

Something like that would be perfect, but I'm not sure I like the idea of pooing on a grate. Sounds a bit tricky to clean if there's a mucky one! Fred has been good this week as I've been home from work, so we'll see. A friend of mine has sent me some info which I hope will help - she said she's observed some SA type behaviour from him (she's a non-practicing behaviourist). I may follow Barbara Woodhouse's* advice of using turf in the tray I bought. Wonder if the neighbour's will notice missing squares from their lawns! * I've got some of her old books, and while some things have moved on, she recommends puppies are kept in what look very like rabbit hutches (but bigger) with turf to use as a loo for times the pup needs a secure area. Not much different from the crates people recommend these days? |

Did this clear up with Fred? I am having a similar problem with Brands, she has always been ok at not toileting in the hosue, but for the last week she's been poo'ing every day at least once in the house  She is left too long at the mo, but when she comes to work with me she'll be ok, at the mo she has mornings, sometimes lunch, after work allllll evening, and before bed, she has always been fine before....Im wondering if it has something to do with Twiglet? What do people think? |

I wonder if this is her way of protesting about recent changes! She's obviously not a mean dog so it isn't in her to be nasty towards Twiglet and so if this is her worst I wouldn't be too worried. She also might have picked up on your negative feelings about work and the excitement about the new job may just have left her feeling unsettled; after all, she doesn't know that she's going to be a major beneficiary of the new work changes - all she knows is that something new is on the horizon and right now, it could be good or it could be bad. Brandy's a clever dog and with intelligence often comes sensitivity, so she can pick up on things quickly. Once the new routine kicks in I'm sure she'll be fine. |

It has eased during the day - my friend who is a behaviourist said it did sound like SA and was probably due to the routine change rather than real separation worries. So now we are all more used to me working, it's got better. There is an occasional accident if I'm gone more than five hours (not often) but the pooing after 30 mins (often while I'm still in the house just inaccessible to Fred) seems to have stopped. At night, still just the same. :( I crate him for a few nights, then for a few nights he's okay, then goes back to crapping at the bottom of the stairs. :x: |

How about crating him at night full stop? I look at my crates sometimes and compare them to the nice squishy sofa we kepe in the kitchen and just assume the dogs prefer the latter - but sometimes, they actually prefer having their own contained little space. |

I know I should put him away every night - he was going in regularly as I was determined to keep him in there every night for a good few weeks to see if I could break the habit, then he hurt his paw and couldn't get in with his lampshade on, so he came back on the bed. The trouble is, I'm too weak and want him with me. :( I will be STRONG. I know he's not worried about being in his crate - he goes in it himself some nights before bed, or I wake up and he's in there (normally if I'm fidgety). It's all me being sad and lonely. Mwah! :'( Edited by Linda & Fred, Apr 12 2009, 08:43 AM.
