...and I'm nervous! We're going to beginner's obedience and apparently the lady who leads the classes is STRICT. :ermm: All she has said to bring is collar, lead and treats, oh...and his bobness, but I just wondered if anyone has any tips for the first time. I'm just wondering how he'll be as he barks and jumps up when he even spots another dog in the distance. :crossedfingers: |

Thank you! Apparently she shouts a lot and says things like "Remember, it's not the dog's fault, it's yours". :yikes: Fair dos! |

Good luck! My main tip is that you know your dog best, so have a clear idea of what you want to get out of training classes. And don't listen to people who say things like 'he's got to get used to it' and watch how the other owners treat their dogs. Anyone hitting or kicking their dogs and allowed to get away with it on a regular basis shows to me a poor training class. |

Most important thing is for both you and Bob to enjoy the class. As Eco Worrier says if there is any aspect of the training you feel uncomfortable with - either with your own dog or someone elses - query it.I'm sure he'll do just fine - as will you,I loved my calsses,so good to be with other owners who really enjoy being with their dogs and who also want to make sure their dogs know how to behave (well most of the time anyway  ) |

Well guys, what can I say other than we got through it! I can't say I enjoyed it per se, but I think the class helped me face my fears of Bob being with other dogs, and socialised Bob which was so important. The teacher said it was going to be more hard work than usual with Bob being 9 months old, we've kinda missed that window of opportunity where he should ideally have been socialised earlier, but it can still work OK, just going to take longer! He did really well, bless him considering it was his first time. :yay: The teacher is really lovely and had a good chat with us before the class. During this Bob took great pleasure in producing awful stenches which floated up between us and the teacher . I was relieved when she said we should never hit a dog, yes, they can be manhandled in the way that you can turn them round etc if they are naughty and grab their collar etc, she said the only time she would ever 'tap' a dog is if they went for you. She's amazing! Bob was a bit of a kangaroo on the lead for the first 10 mins and barked quite a lot, but we were taught how to turn him round and say a sharp no! He really calmed down after that. Anyway, we walked round the hall (mostly on 2 legs as he was trying to chase the minature Datschund in front) and stopped and Bob 'sat' with a little help from me! We tried the 'about turn' and the 'down' but it was all a bit too much for his first time. At one point he was more interested in the water bowl! We had to cross the hall past other dogs and we even tried recall, you could tell that was the bit all owners dreaded! and my heart was in my mouth as the teacher let Bob off his lead, but he came to me for a treat, good boy! After about 20 mins I could tell he had enough and as I was trying to get him to sit down, Bob did try and go for me. I tapped him on the nose but I think he was just frustrated and needed a poo (even though he had one right before the class!) I was quite worried throughout the class that he would escape his collar as he is a bit of a Harry Houdini, and he was trying to do the 'reverse' thing, but he didn't in the end! Phew! the most tiring half an hour for a while! :crossedfingers: for next week! |

 Put it down to stress, if ever Jess gets 'uptight'about anything new, the first thing she does is have a 'poo' Glad it went well, the 'hyper' activity could have bee in someway picking up on your anticipation as well. Now this 'First'one is out of the way and you now what to expect the second time will be a lot better - and before you know it your little star will be 'huge' :crossedfingers:   ;) |

Isn't it funny how often people are described as strict and then when we meet them, they turn out to be nice, down to earth folk! |

I know! She was still quite strict though (much needed!) and actually used the phrase, "Remember it's your fault, not the dog's". :) Just taught Bob to do 'down'....good boy! Wouldn't do it last night but followed her technique and it worked! He did it 6 times. :yippee: Going to try again this evening for another 5 min session! x |

Well done to the pair of you. A lot of dogs aren't overly keen on doing a down in the company of other dogs, it's a great idea to get him comfortable with it at home first - he'll soon have it off to a tee! |

:yay: :yay: :yay: well done both of you! sounds like you did great. It is difficult but sounds like you've got a fab attitude for it. We had to swap dogs once at our class and I did better with someone elses dog because I didn't have any feelings for him lol George sure knows how to get away with stuff, but your trainer is right, its not the dogs fault its yours! And wel done a million times for the successful recall, we still have problems with that, he thinks he's done well if he can see me! My fault again! Good luck for next week! |

Thank you! Teacher reckons that Bob isn't a Patterdale  , says he's tall for one so may be a mix. We'll never know, but if George is and he looks like George he must be, right? OMG - hope we don't have to swap dogs - there's a couple of scary looking German Shepherds! Was funny - this couple came walking in with their 2 dogs, a greyhounds and a minature Daschund :) Little and large, and they had matching pink collars....aw! |

:yay: well done! Sounds like you have picked a good class! Bob looks a real character - whatever he is!!! There are a few leggy fell terriers about, as they have bits of beddie blood a few generations back. Patterdale has become just a word to describe solid black coloured terriers these days, so don't worry about it - he's cool B) |
