Brilliant idea!!! I have one in my bag and one in my 'dog walking coat' (the one covered in mud!) but I never thought of having them everywhere. That would be so usefull. Thanks! |

:ok: The button ones are best for grabbing quick, because it doesn't matter if you pick it up upside down. |

Hi what an interesting topic. I go clicker training with Nobby my one year old Border terrier x jrt and he is doing realy well at it. I was told that when I give the "take it " command you should pick the food or toy up that you told him to leave and give it to him as you say "take it", this way he learns only to take from you when you have told him to rather than saying "take it" and letting him help himself. This has worked well with Nobby in training class and outside. He likes to pick up old chewing gum off the floor when on walks so I shout "leave it" and he drops it. He will then stand over the chewing gum waiting to be told to take it but i don't want him to have it so I then recall him click and treat I enjoy clicker training with Nobby and was told at the begining by people that I was wasting my time training a Border X jrt, but we proved them wrong and nobby passed his beginers class with distinction and then his advanced class with merit. I hope you find somthing that works for you xxxx love Julie and nobby. |

Thanks again everyone. Nobby and Fred sound fantastic! I appreciate the fact terriers are a challenge when training but it just makes the rewards so much sweeter when you get them!

Dudley was a good boy about 'leave it' until a certain very cute very ginger boy came to live with us, he's still not too bad and I can leave food lying around if he's the only one about but I have noticed that he will grab things when we are out now but will usually give it up if I spot him. Tom on the other hand will leave anything that is not food if I tell him and is quite good handing things over after a bit of a chase. Tom's biggest thing when we are out is tissues and will grab them all them all the time and I have resorted to 'NO' or 'AH AH' as unless I get 'leave it' out before it's in his mouth I've no chance. Perhaps that's the problem with Widge he knows 'leave' means don't touch but doesn't associate this with letting it go once he's got it. |
