Brands has had very gunky eyes in the mornings recently, so i have been wiping them, and then sometimes later on in the day they are a bit gunky again. I havnt taken her to the vet as I sometimes feel they give them things just for the sake of it, but would not hesitate if i thought it was something serious. But thought id get any TT advice to see if i should take her or anyone has any ideas on what it could be, and any remedies/advice? She's always had a little bit of it in the mornings which i think is usual but just a little concerned why there'd be a lot of it all of a sudden and more. Will keeps telling me she's crying cos of Twig, nasty boy! |

Kira has weepy eyes sometimes, once thought it was conjunctivitis so took her to the vet, she just had weepy eyes and the vet suggested luke warm tea water and a soft cotton wool ball and just clean the eyes with that twice a day (obviously a new cotton ball per eye to prevent spreading any infection if there was one). Helped loads with her weepy eyes. Although I'd not normally do that without ensuring it wasn't an infection first. |

Jess sometimes has weepy eyes as well, I just bathe with warm salt water when they get a bit sticky. I wonder sometimes if she suffers from certain pollens as with her it is definately seasonal. If you're concerned a visit to the Vet would be worth it - if for nothing more than to put your mind at rest! :ok: |

I always use cold tea with any eye problem. Though unlike Kimmy I always do it first before going to the vet! Brandy has been spayed hasn't she? It could be Dry Eye which is basically drying out of the mucus membranes and happens in spayed dogs ..... and menopausal women ..... if it is, it's no real biggy. There's a simple, quick test that the vet can do and there are pharmaceuticals available to help with it. Boo (of course she would!) has it, I found out because I hadn't been overly scrupulous at keeping them clean from pollens (normally I wash eye's out once or twice a week during the summer) she got an infection - because her eye balls were drier than normal it hung on way past the cold tea stage and she needed an antibiotic to shift it. I decided not to go with the percription drugs and opted for daily tea bathing and at last years health check the vet said they were in excellent condition. |

Thanks all :) I thought there was something to do with tea but i couldnt remember what! I will try this for a week or so and if no improvement book her in, I just dont like giving her unnecessary anti biotics if i can help it, cant be good for them. Tafia, she is spayed so perhaps this is a similar thing to Boo, I will def try tea if it worked for her, worth a shot for Brands! |

Yep cold tea here too.If it's just gunky and the eyes aren't red and irritating her this will be fine,if the discharge changes colour to look "pussy" then she needs to see the vet.Daisy's eyes need cleaning far more frequently than Duncan's do. |

It might just be because it's been drier recently? Meg has very dirty eyes compared to Sally, she's had more recently because it's been dry and dusty. And probably because she spends so much time rolling in stuff she's bound to get something in her eyes silly thing! Hope the tea sorts it out, if Brandy doesn't seem bothered by it it's probably nothing serious, she'd let you know if it was sore. |

Spaying is the complete removal of the uterus and ovaries. Besides producing eggs, the ovaries manufacture the females sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone which are responsible for bringing about the secondary female sex characteristics such as a more refined body shape and the development of the mammary glands. Another of their jobs is to regulate the lubrication of the bodies mucus membranes. Mucus membrane is basically a lining of various internal and external organs - therefore the body "dries" out somewhat. The eye keeps itself clean through a combination of blinking and natural lubrication, a spayed bitch still blinks but no longer has the same amount of lubrication to wash out foreign objects - hence infection. Exactly the same thing happens in menopausal/post menopausal women. Edited by Tafia, Apr 9 2009, 11:56 PM.

Maggie has weepy eyes regularly and I just clean them up with a kitchen towel and water and if necessary cold tea. I would say that unless the discharge is yellow and the eye is having problems opening, then don't worry too much just bathe as and when and save yourself a trip to the vet  |
