Ok so how do i stop this barking - i'm moving on friday and will be mid terrace - there is one area of the fence where they could see the neighbours so am going to get some bamboo screening but if the neighbours make a sound the barking will start - i don't want to upset the neighbours as soon as i move in.

Do the dogs pass through doorways or down/up stairs ahead of you?
When there's a knock at the door do they get there ahead of you?
Do you step over or walk around them when they are sitting /laying in your path?

This what was my dog was interpreting as a "weak" leader, although i wasn't guilty
of the 3rd item, it was enough....

Try the"bah" command with a guttural inflection the dog responds as if it's a growl
whenever for example they try to take charge in these 3 examples.

Stand tall at the door when no one's knocking & claim the space at the door as yours,
No Exceptions, & if they crowd you "bah" with more emphasis each time while taking
2-3 steps toward them, no more. If they are more obstinate than mine a can with pennies/keys
in them may be dropped in front of them.(Use the same method in examples 2&3)

In my case Maya took this to mean I was the pack leader & charging the fence was no longer
needed as well as not going beserk while on lead facing other dogs!

I hope this helps :crossedfingers:

Thats exactly what Harvey does  when next doors dogs are out, he really does go for it hurling himself at the fence all four feet off the ground. I try to only let him out when I know their dogs are in  We get on well with next door so no issues there ;)

Funny thing is Strawboss they are due to hear anytime now if they've been accepted to move to Canada, never know they could be neighbours of yours :ph43r:

Neat! If they end up in Ottawa I may see them....I'm hard to miss as the only one in the city
running a Smart car with an Airedale in the shotgun seat!

Fred barks every time the neighbour on one side makes a noise, and I haven't been able to stop him, but do restrict the length of barking as I mentioned earlier.

I would do some 'damage' control as best you can to start with, ie try to have a telly on the party wall if your living rooms back onto each other to muffle their sounds, and I would attempt to clicker train him to offer a behaviour every time they make a sound that's likely to set him off. I am going to give this a go with Fred when I've got some time off later. I will be initially clicking anything he does, that's not a bark - sometimes he just lifts his ears up, depends what the noise is. The idea is that I will then shape that into something else, depending on what happens.

Obviously that assumes you have nothing better to do than sit with a clicker in your hand waiting for a noise, and that my idea will work...

Good luck anyway.

We're also having barking problems with Bob, not so much in the garden unless the JRT at the back comes out - then it's full on war  . But it happens when we're out on walks, it's pretty much any dog - he pulls on the lead and pitches towards the dog and barks and keeps barking until out of sight.

I've tried changing direction, a shaky box filled with dried pasta (doesn't work), vocal noises, grasping collar and turning around, water, but nothing seems to work.
Thinking of trying calming bands - anyone tried these?

Bob is a dream in the house, but think we need to work more on who is boss! I would like some tips on 'things' I can do or body language to teach him as nothing seems to work.

Thanks!

I had issues with Jess barking, she would bark at anyone going by the house this manifested itself into barking whilst watching from the window to barkiing at people in the street :woohoo:

Tried all sorts from letting her know we knew the people were there and telling her she was a Good Girl for doing her job [works well] but never really stopped her altogether

One day during a barking frenzy Mum pointed her finger at Jess and just said NO! - she stopped :o

Now as soon as she starts barking we just have to point our finger and she's quiet?? Don't ask me how/why it works but it just does  . Have to say that neither dad or I have quite the same effect first off, usually takes a couple of 'pointy fingers' but Mum - just the one does it every time

When you tried the rattle, did you 'tune him in' or just get it out for the barking?

I don't have a problem with mine barking at home - they do bark if the postie comes but quieten immediately s/he leaves and they don't bark in the garden at all
BUT Daisy barking when she sees a cat was becoming a nightmare (especially as it's more a scream than a bark and people have actually come outside thinking she's being murdered  ) I started the giving a treat when she shut up - to draw breath - and the command quiet. It works perfectly now, unless I've forgotten the treats, then she'll stop the first time but once she realises there's no reward coming continues her racket - cunning little blighters aren't they.

Sorry, I mean the dog needs to be taught what the rattle means, which usually means it's taught with food to mean 'leave it'. Once they understand that, then it can be used for other things, that they value more. They really shouldn't be used without a professional advising as it can lead to more aggression. They work for Fred, but for some things not until I had a behaviourist teach me how quick and how often to use it for various 'offences' until I only have to reach towards it for his behaviour to change.

Lunging on lead and barking is a fairly typical terrier behaviour, and you can't train the terrier out of a terrier, as I found out after spending nearly two years in a training school who were expecting me to do just that. Despite some of the instructors being terrier owners!

If your dog isn't comfy with other dogs near him, then try to find a distance where he's not bothered and feed him! I feed a dog I walk when he's looking at the other dog (using the clicker to mark the behaviour I am feeding), and after a couple of treats I can't get him to stop looking at me. We are slolwy decreasing distance, but he's a GSD cross, so he's got his own issues.
