Well, as for Maya lunging & barking on lead, I'm just about ready to bust my buttons!
We went to PetsMart this morning & she was a quiet well behaved lady!
Some other dogs were barking at her but she was "above that"
By george.... I think she's "got it!"

HELPPPPP!!! Milo and the 2 dogs next door HATE each other! One neighbour has a female terrier - fine no probs, other neighbour has 2 MALE terriers - BIG PROBLEMS - them and Milo go at the fence like they wanna rip each others heads off! The neighbours use spray collars - i've been advised that'd be a waste of time with Milo as he loves water etc and if i squirt him with a water spray he shakes his head and carries on - any ideas. I'm worried that in time he'll get really reactive as he was at the village fete on Saturday - whilst standing in the dog show ring he just lunged at a staffi with no warning or reason - the owner was quite disgusted!!

Can't even begin to think of what you can do unfortunately. Hopefully someone else might have some ideas though. :crossedfingers:

Jean Donaldson (Culture Clash) recommends off-lead introductions as long as all dogs have bite inhibition, so if they want a bit of a scuffle they can get that out of the way without humans worrying, then they need to meet off-lead away from the fence on a regular basis so they don't 'relapse', although I doubt it would be as simple as that with terriers because it's a more inbred instinct!

If you've got worries about reactivity try reading Control Unleashed which is written for owners who want to go agility with their dogs, but it helped me a huge amount with Fred.

By bite inhibition is Jean referring to muzzles?
Sounds like a good way for them to settle any grievances, real or imagined!

No, bite inhibition is where they learn (usually as puppies) how hard they can use their mouths without hurting or causing damage. It's why puppies have such nasty sharp teeth!

So a dog that has it will be very unlikely to hurt another dog in a scuffle, it's an evoluntionary design to allow packs to live together without damaging each other and so also the pack.

Most dogs know full well how hard they are using their teeth, it's just whether they have learnt not to hurt people/dogs. Fred's is rubbish, although I have noticed him pulling his bites recently the times he does decide to bite me these days, so obviously they can learn when they are older! Just he should have learnt not to touch me at all!

Ok now I see, & a puppie's needle teeth may help in weaning too? ( poor mum  )
Too bad about Fred's lack of inhibition; Maya had a tendency to mouth my
hands at first but I found that if I "squealed" she would stop.
Now she doesn't do it at all :yippee:

Well next door neighbour had an idea on saturday - instead of calling them away why don't we just let them bark at each other - so we did - and the problems 10 times worse - now they really really really wanna kill each other - but to be fair her dog is instigating it more than milo to the extent yesterday mine was asleep in the front room and i was in the consevatory and could hear it at the fence snarling and growling!

As I've already mentioned I'm in same situation with Harvey, he goes beserk at the fence if he can smell that next doors dogs are out, they are both Australian shepherd dogs. Recently their dogs have poked their noses through the trellis bit at the top and I'm sure Harvey as really gone for them. Did mention this to my neighbour who said well serves him right for poking his nose through  Have to say because they are so resonable about it I haven't seriously done anything about getting him out of it, other than trying to avoid letting Harvey out when I know they are out, and if it does kick off get hold of Harvey and bring him back in. Harvey has come face to face with one of them when we used to go training and he did take an instant dislike, I wondered if it was down to the dog having different coloured eyes (one being blue) that put Harvey's back up  Not any help for you Dawnie I'm afraid, but would be interested if you find a solution :D
