I took Twig to obedience again today, and when she sat my instructor pointed out she always puts her leg out to the side straight, she said its prob just a puppy thing but to watch it cos its unusual she'd put it straight like that when she is older....she also asked how long I walk her as I shouldnt over exercise incase this is the cause, I walk her for about 30-45 mins, but mainly 30, 45 more ona weekend. I know I've asked this before, but is this the right amount, and should this be on lead more controlled, as smetimes she may have a 30 min walk but do a lot of running around. Hard to make a puppy do a calm walk really though!

Here's her in a sit, anyone any comments?! I am not too worried as I think she just sits lazy and puppy like, but when she asked about exercise as well i thought id put a pic up and re-question my walking routine!

Can't see anything odd there  But I think 45 minutes is too much at one time for her, she's still very young, especially if it involves lots of mad dashing round.Try to cut down the free running a bit and get her to play some on-lead games/training when you're out.

Do you mean her back legs? Looks like a normal puppy sit to me. If you are teaching 'sit' personally I'd not work on it too hard as she may learn something you don't intend to teach - that sit means 'sit with your leg sticking out'. Fred thinks sit means 'sit like a frog'. If he sits of his own accord he sits properly. It's probably not an issue unless you intend to do anything 'competative' with her later. Fred finds it hard to sustain a sit/stay with his frogs legs and I have to tuck them back in for him. :D

Personally I am happy to stick with '5 mins per month of life' as many times a day as you like as long as they've rested in between. No idea what that idea came from though! After 6 months I'm happy to be a bit more loose, but my walks have lots of stop starting as I always train on mine. I don't think I walk any of the dogs under a year for as much as an hour on a regular basis. If I do because I've walked too far before turning round for instance, there's at least 20 mins of that onlead.

Yes sorry didnt state which leg did I  the back leg, I am not planning to do anything competitive and hadnt thought anything of it, but thought id get your opinions!

I norm do 5 mins on lead in morn, 15 mins on lead at lunch and 10-15 mins off lead after work. Actually, when I look at what I've typed thats fine, I know it is lol. Its just weekends, sometimes we feel its a shame to leave her at home when we are taking Brands out so she may have a 45 min more running around walk, may have to stop this and walk her seperately. Gowd puppies are hard work, Will should have listened to me and let me rescue

No idea what that idea came from though!
The rule is basically for the large breeds, young bones and a fast increasing weight ratio putting strain on their joints. Some of the larger, heavier boned breeds have a relatively increased risk of osteosarcome so it's incredibly important to keep bones as healthy as possible. Plus the larger breeds mature at a slower rate. But because it's the only rule it get's quoted for all shapes & sizes. A young, light dog like Twig, who's naturally going to mature at a faster is a different kettle of fish all together.

Half an hour to 45 minutes is no biggy - especially on grass and soft surfaces. If you were doing 45 minutes every day of hard, trotting road work there might be a slight possibility of Twiggy getting a stress injury - but she's not doing that is she? But even then she'd be at more risk of boredom than anything else. I imagine she's doing multi paced, multi surfaced fun. At the same age both Boo & Davey were out playing in the park at regular intervals throughout the day, probably lasting half an hour each time and thrived on it. Building muscle, stamina, agility and increasing supplty - all incredibly important.

Some dogs are neat sitters, other aren't. Davey has never been an elegant sitter, splays all over the shop but the one thing people in the breed have always commented on is his sound rear movement.

Thanks Tafia! I did think it was probably more of a worry with bigger dogs, but when Fred came the rescue did mention it then - it was the first time I'd heard of it. A friend of mine has a wiemy with a bad shoulder at the moment and the vet thinks he was walked too much as a puppy - but no idea how much she did walk him.

Thanks Tafia, that makes sense about big dogs, and Twig is a small very light little thing so I will just carry on as I am but perhaps make sure in week days I dont go up to 45 mins and stick to 30 mins as I am.
But weekends I think a little extra shouldnt do any harm, I'll just make sure its spread out throughout the day and not too much for her!
