:err: Thanks very much for your advice Wild Whippies, I will definitely suggest the salicylic acid to the vet.

All the vets advice was mainly to keep the pads as mosturized as possible and file/buff/cut the pads when they grow so thick and hard that the cream is no longer able to reach through all the layers , we have tried loads of different creams (oils, wax) human and animal, I even tracked down some ones in America that we don't have here while in New York last year, but we have found the two things that work the best are, the treatment (come up by the vet of another owner with an IT and HK) of getting him to stand in a tray of 50% Propylene glycol and 50% water, which he does now every night bless him  , and Neem Oil if they look at all sore as its a great natural antiseptic and really a miracle oil, great for human conditions too.

I'm not sure if we've tried Shaw's paw wax so will definitely get some and try it.

I think from reading your post the dremmel is not going to work on his pads, the heat will be too much, enven using a normal file I often stop as I can feel it getting warm.

It very interesting that you say "frictional rubbing can exascerbate the condition" as the large pads on his paws are the ones I have to totally file and not cut and they are the ones that crack the worst, but if left for any length (like I did for 6 weeks, just soaking) grow big anyway and things like grass seeds can (and did :err: ) get in and cause problems.

Its like the vet at the hospital said, there's no cure and he needs Palliative care to try and keep the HK at bay. I was just being a bit silly hoping the dremmel might be a miracle cure, as those little paws have to last at least another 13 years. :crossedfingers:

But thanks very much for the salicylic acid suggestion as none of the vets thought of this!

I will definitely get a drimmel for his nails though, and introduce it slowly to him as he is rather :x: at anything at his feet with all his treatment, can't say I blame the poor lad though.

lol ask her to post the one about her dog(jack seven) having the drains in its neck!thats interesting too! pictures are a bit yucky though!
You're talking to the person who actually found drawing and clearing a blocked anal gland fascinating - yucky doesn't quite do that experience justice!

Wow this nail dremmeling is great!

I bought this Model from Homebase the only one they had, its a Dremel Hobby 3000, what ever that means  , the lady said they don't do cordless ones but just looking at their web site to get the link see they do! Oh well the one I got is fine, has quite a few different speeds and a nice soft blue material holder for the drill and all the bits :yikes: that come with it and I have no idea what they are meant for and probably never will. :D

I started off just turning it on in the corner of the room for several days and Rascal was being really nosey trying to see what it was and trying to sniff/lick it, he didn't mind it beside him while on at all and even tried to put it in his mouth   , but as soon as I held his paw he backed off, he really doesn't like his paws touched any more. So we have had to compromise and use treats, he lies down and lets me file his nails with the Dremel once his dad is feeding him his the 'good' treats, but it works well and his thick brittle nails are looking much better already after a few short sessions. :ok: :yay:

:) Thanks everyone for all the info and advice. :flower:
