Hi
We are considering buying a Border Terrier and my research lead me here :yay:

I have been searching the forum for info, just to make sure we are making the right choice.

Trying to be level headed and not rush into it. ;)

:welcome: Zero.

It's a very exciting time starting a potential search, if you're anything like me it'll quickly turn into an almost full time research project! Potentially one of the most rewarding ones you're likely to do as well.

Not a Border owner myself but there are loads on the forum and I'm sure they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

:welcome: you're certainly planning on making an ideal choice for a companion - not that I'm biased at all :ph43r: They are fabulous dogs, bright and intelligent, real Terriers but not over excitable as some can be.Please do your homework very carefully though, they have recently become much more popular and there are sadly an awful lot of puppy farms and byb jumping on the bandwagon producing Borders that may not have the temperament that I would expect to see.
How would you describe the Border? What is it that appeals to you about the breed and what sort of companion are you anticipating s/he will be?
Do hope you enjoy the forum,we're a friendly bunch that adore the spirited nature of the Terrier :D

:welcome: Borders are lovely - excellent choice!
Why not send Border Dawn a PM?

There are so many borders being churned out now - please, please consider a rescue or go to a reputable breeder (i.e. someone who does not have to advertise, but is recommended by their peers)

:crossedfingers: hope you will find your perfect dog :flower:

Hi there and a very warm welcome to TT.

A useful place to start might be www.dogsblog.com where you will see a list of breeds and may well find yourself a nice Border Terrier in rescue. Border Terrier rescue themselves are obviously worth getting in contact with. The relief/rescue organisations aim to match the right dog with the right owner and may have more enquiries than they have dogs, so it would help to be as flexible as possible in terms of age, colour and sex.

If you want to find a good breeder, you could go to the Crufts website and check back through their archived results over the past few years for the Border Terrier results. Chances are you'll see the same kennel prefix names coming up again and again and you could try approaching these kennels direct. Realistically, you may be waiting some time for a puppy: the better breeders are breeding to get as close as possible to their particular breed's "standard" rather than breeding to provide puppies to the general public. The best they will do is put you on a waiting list with no promises. It may speed things up if you say you'd be happy with a 6 month old pup - some breeders "run on" puppies they aren't sure of but accept at 5-6 months they won't make it to the showring. Benefits here are you still get a fun-loving pup but he or she will probably be housetrained and are unlikely to have amassed too many bad habits.

The places to avoid like the plague are back yard breeders who advertise dogs in the 'free adverts'
Puppy farms - obviously! Thoughnot everyone understands how to spot them. Basically if an establishment is offering readily available dogs in several different breeds then they are a commercial breeder.

Neither of these types of breeders will pay too much heed to breeding for character and temperament - which pretty much define terriers. BorderDawn is one of our BT experts and it might be worth sending her a personal message?

Good luck with your search and do keep us posted with news of how you get on.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and sound advice. :)

The above question got me thinking. :ermm:
There are four of us who will be welcoming a new dog into the family, myself, my wife and a Grandson & Grandaughter.
They don't live with us, but always seem to be with us

Over the years we have had many dogs (retriever, cocker, yorkie & lab). We trained all of them to a basic obedience level.
We've all agreed that we need a small dog, who is sturdy, trainable & cute  (that last one is from the female side of the team)
The Border terrier came out top of the list.

As individuals our wish list is varied:-

Grandson & myself go canoeing & camping, so we get damp and muddy. The dog would have to wear a bouancy aid sometimes, also get damp & muddy, be prepared to be used as a hot water bottle on cold camping nights :D
I want a companion who will sometimes travel with me working in my van.

Granddaughter (4) wants a dog who will rest its head on her lap to be stroked, be prepared to wear the occasional pink hair slide and neckerchief (also pink) :nope:

My wife wants a companion for her morning route marches, we've stopped going because she walks too far and to fast, complaining that we hold her up. ;) Also wants the same as granddaughter.

Grandson who's having a difficult time at the moment needs a friend.

I'm the only one with reservations.
I keep reading that they have a tendancy to just run for it when out walking if they get a scent.
As we walk the local fields and woodland I would like to think I had some control and be able to let the dog run free.
However some friends of ours BT has never show this tendancy and is pretty layed back about life in general.

From what you've said the BT is the perfect dog for you, it ticks all the boxes you've highlighted including the hair slide or tiara even.

(One for your grandaughter).

As you've had experience with training the recall shouldn't be an issue, yes some do have a strong scent urge but not all. My Harvey is great at sniffing out tennis balls from a hedge (particulaly if I've forgotten to take his) but when we had a rat in the garden he was hopeless  He also doesn't like to lose sight of us to the point when he was a pup we'd suddenly panick that he's ran off only to find him at our heels.

I can see this little Border is going to have a great life with your family :D

Just wanted to add re: the recall issue. I see a lot of Border Terrier locally being walked and all of them off lead. Yes they do every now and again run off into the bushes but they come back again when they've finished. My experience is that as a breed, they're pretty good on recall, especially taking into account their terrier heritage!

Just got to say, Harvey! What have they done to you?

Well you've certainly ticked all the right boxes as to what sort of companion you are anticipating :ok: A good Border will meet all this and more. Some BT owners have said they have a tendency to wander but mostly that's down to not being taught recall early enough - they are working Terriers and anyone who takes a Border on must realise that. They may go off after intriguing scents, they may want to kill small furry animals but will live perfectly happily with said furries in their own home. But Duncan I find is very biddable,he was very easy to train as a pup and is very obedient now,Daisy my wee rescued dog is obedient when she wants to be  but that is also partly my fault as I wasn't consistent enough with her training - and that is the key to training Borders, and all Terriers, they are smart little dogs and if you let them get away with bad behaviour more than once they will expect to do the same every time :D
Marie Harvey looks totally disgusted in that photo - can't say I blame him

There is no way that when we are on a boys only canoe camping trip, will there be a Boder Terrier standing on the bow of the canoe doing a Titanic pose, wearing a tiara. :P

Granddaughter loved the photo (thanks) and is busy looking through her hair accessories box for suitable trinkets.

What have I let myself in for. :o

That sounds like our normal everyday family life.

The decision has been made and a Border Terrier it will be, as long as the wearing of jewellery isn't compulsary (the dog I mean)

That was the easy bit.

Now the hard part, we have to find one. :o :crossedfingers:

Seatbelts have been fastened. :hyper:
