An interesting question that came up when we were doing our research. All our previous dogs have been female, but we are now thinking perhaps a male may be good. :) We've always had girls because we thought (rightly or wrongly) that they are quieter, easier to train, more loving & we wanted to avoid those embarrassing moments that male dogs have involving Great Aunt Maude's best tapestry cushion. :o  So Border terriers male or female? Anything we ought to know? :yikes: Oh and we aren't going to breed or stud, just a family pet. Zero B) |

So things certainly seem to moving along! Don't no whether there's a distinct gender difference in BT's necessarily but perhaps one of the BT boffins might be able to give you further info on that. I know in my breed that pet owners often have a definite bias but when you talk to someone with years & years of breed experience they'll say it's all down to the individual! Having a male doesn't necessarily mean embarasing incidents with cushions, legs or scenting. It does mean that there's a possibility that they could start fancying themselves as being a bit of a lad at a certain age but this isn't the end of the world. A well breed, sensible pup will invariably grow into a sensible dog - bought up with good guidelines and enough, varied exercise then embarasing situations don't really happen. |

Well I've only had one of each and by far the more  is Daisy, she's the hunter, the one with selective deafness etc but that may just be Daisy and nothing to do with her sex  BorderDawn is our BT expert,I'll pm her and see if she has more advice.Neither of the 2 males I've had have ever humped, one is neutered, the other wasn't.I agree with Tafia, keeping them under control will avoid problems. |

I have seen many females humping! Randy little devils. Or in the case of the Gt Dane who grabs her 'brother' by the teeth and humps him, randy BIG devil! |

Sorry I missed this. I have had/got both male and female Borders and I dont think it makes much difference really. The female I have is probably a little quieter in the house, by that I mean happy to lie around more than the males, but she is as much a nutter as the boys when she starts!! Ive not had a male that humps stuff either, most pups will do it as part of growing up, they soon stop it. Do your homework with regard to reputable breeders, and dont forget these dogs retain ALL their Terrier instinct and working characteristics, so training from a very young age is imperitive. Any questions, just ask. |

Congratulations! What a handsome boy you have there! My BT Knox is just now 14 weeks old also. What a fun age! Knox has also discovered bugs and lizards are big fun to chase, but don't taste so good. |
