I know this has been a mighty delayed update but lots has happened. Firstly, my friend reached a point where she was going to rehome Cooper as he attacked a teenager in the park. Bath Dogs Home put him on their waiting list and, during this time, the trainer at the class Cooper has gone to every week for nearly a year opted to do one to one training with them. Cooper responded well. Then Bath contacted my friend to say they had a space for him and, when she told them she was working with him, they offered her spaces in 2 of their training classes. Cooper came on in leaps and bounds and was already behaving like a lovely boy. I had mentioned that he seemed wary of his back end being touched some time back but the vets said he was fine. Then his back end started collapsing. Still the vets said he was fine. He couldn't climb stairs, use steps, jump in the car and still the vets could find nothing wrong. They eventually gave in and kept him in for a day with x-rays. Cooper has severe bi-lateral hip dysplasia. Unsurprisingly, he has become a MUCH happier boy now that he's on Metacam permanently. I've also suggested Synflex and hydro. However, the vet has told my friend that there is NO connection between his behaviour and the hip dysplasia and has told her not to focus too much on the HD but to work harder on his demeanour!!!!!!!! I have suggested another vet, but Cooper is a changed boy now that he is pain free  |

I know there are many wonderful vets out there but my good dog it makes you wonder when you hear things like this. Wish it was just a one off, but sadly it isn't. Wonderful news that Cooper is coming on leaps and bounds, great news and long may it continue! |

So pleased Cooper is still with his owner and she's working so hard to correct his problems, but how angry she must have been when he was finally diagnosed :err: Hope he continues to improve. |

WTF? And how long did that vet study in canine behaviour to come up with that conclusion? It's possible the dog is just a bad tempered dog, but really, constant pain so bad he was collapsing is gonna make anyone irritable. Even a terrier with their tolerance for pain of any sort. Fred is much happier now, although he is still a pain in the butt half the time. The biggest change we made was stopping the two day events, and really limiting even one day events. I also watch him for signs enough is enough, and if I stop what we're doing (have spent all day training then backed out of assessments as it's just too much for him) when he tells me he's had enough he's a much more pleasant dog to have around, and possibly Cooper will be the same! Even if they are both still mardy buggers. ;) |

just read all this from start to finish and tbh halfway through i thought that dogs got something going on with his back end. :err: to hear the vet said there was nothing wrong with him so often and to then find out he was diagnosed with HD and that they vets stuck to his guns and said its got nothing to do with his behaviour is in a word UNBELIEVABLE!change your vet! glad the poor lad is coming on so wel now,but really i wonder how many dogs would have been persevered with like your friend has and how many would have gone on a one way trip to the vets? |

I'm just waiting on another phone call as last night my friend discovered a large lump on Cooper's rear hock :err: Only 3 weeks ago he had a non-cancerous lump removed from his front leg and just last week he had his legs checked all over and the lump wasn't there then :err: Poor little fella is going through the mill  |

Apparently it's a grass allergy  I find it too coincidental that he has 2 lumps that look the same come up within the space of 3 weeks on his legs: one needs operating to be removed and the other needs antibiotics, anti-histamines, evening primrose oil, cream and a diagnosis of being permanent at the cost of £15 per month for life!! I have now STRONGLY recommended a second opinion. |

can you take a pic of it and post it here?my daughters quite experienced with lumps and bumps on dogs.ill send a copy of it to her and see what she thinks. :ok: one of her older dogs was recently pts as he had a lump which was diagnosed as a grass seed in his throat and was operated on.it went down and later came back with a vengence.turns out it was a fast growing cancer so they took the decision to not bring him round from the anaesthetic.shes also had a lot of experience from other lumps and bumps with her other whippets one of them on jeebs which was thought cancerous and turned out not to be and some on her eldest girl.she may be able to recommend a vet or a course of treatment or something fingers crossed for Cooper,he deserves some luck :crossedfingers: |

:crossedfingers: poor Cooper! :flower: but well done Cooper's owner for persevering! How anyone can suggest pain does not exacerbate grumpiness is beyond me - unless they've been helping themselves to the novacaine and live in their own happy little world :peace: |
