Total Gas Bag!

Hey everyone. Lily turns 8 next week on 21st June & lately I've been thinking of changing her food but seems so confusing in supermarkets & each time I leave with buying nothing. Lily is currently fed Pedigree Mixer, with a small amount of Pedigree Small Dog Favourites wet food along with fresh fruit & veg everyday (eats better than me ). She seems to enjoy this (but she does enjoy anything ) but I'm so confused as to what she needs as some of the senior dog food I've seen on sale shock me in protein value :yikes:.

This is her current food.

Pedigree Mixer

Protein - 11.5%
Oil - 6.5%
Ash - 7.5%
Fire - 4%
Added - Copper 10mg/kg as copper sulphate, Vitamin A 4900 IU/kg, Vitamin D 490 IU/kg, Vitamin E 49mg/kg

Pedigree Small Dog Favourites

Protein - 8%
Oil - 5.5%
Ash -3%
Fibre - 0.4%
Moisture - 80%

She was weighed last month at vets, 8.5kg.

Of course it totally depends on the dog and whether you have any reason for feeling that it's nutritional needs are being met by it's current diet or not.

The cynic in me says that all these senior diets are a marketing ploy - can understand the need for Pup/Whelping diet but not necessarily senior.

ive got a number of elderly dogs and for years i fed them a complete diet but when my daughter came back to live with us she cooked food for her racing dogs every day and so i got into the habit of it and i have to say it has made a difference especially to their coats and general condition.im not a fan of tinned food as you dont know what goes into it.i have a friend on another forum who has worked in the meat industry all his life from abbatoirs to convenience meals etc.after what hes told me i wont buy any ready made convenience meals unless it says chicken breast on the box rather than reconstituted chicken (the stuff thats all mangled and shredded then made into chunks of chicken shapes)hes currently working for a company that makes food like this for tescos and farmfoods.as for mince in some places he told me they use udders and other nasty bits and pieces to bulk the meat out :(
i feed a minced beef or lamb with freshly minced veggies and pasta and then add a wholemeal mixer biscuit to it.i also add evening primrose oil and a supplement for arthritis and rheumatism (glucosamine/chondroitin)

Beauty is 8 and eats half 'normal' food and half senior/lite. Usually the senior diets are lower in calories so you can carry on feeding the same amount but if the dog is taking less exercise it won't get fat, and some of them do put in supplements for aging bones and joints.

Beauty is only on it because I have to keep Fred on a low cal diet, and even the senior is too much for him with the amount of training (and therefore treats) I give him. If your dog is still up and about and getting lots of exercise and has no medical problems you can keep her on 'normal' food. They say prevention is better than cure so you could give her a separate supplement for joints etc if you want to.

Beauty still has lots of energy and gets lots of exercise.

Thanks everyone for your help. I forgot  to mention that Lily has a leaking heart valve & is on medication twice a day for this, & she seems to be good & still runs around like a puppy

Linda may I ask what senior/lite food you mix in with Beauty other food, If you don't mind me asking :flower:

Both my dogs are on Nature Diet, I won't feed anythiing else anymore. I did use Burns before that, which is a good one.
