Total Gas Bag!

I'm at mums as they have gone to Plymouth for the day on a pre arranged day trip. They gave Sam worming tablets yesterday morning and during the evening he became very quiet and then when out in the garden kept squatting down like he was trying to go to the toilet. He was still the same this morning although managed to go to the toilet but still kept squatting and laying down frequently. As they had this coach trip planned also taking my 86 year old uncle and Sean was home he took Sam into the vets this morning. The vet gave him a thorough check over and couldn't find anything obvious she said the tablets shouldn't have caused it but didn't really know. Suggested him to only have rice and chicken to eat for a couple of days. She did give him two jabs Duphamox and dexadreson (Sean seemed thinks one was an anitibiotic and the other anti imflammatory) Anyway after work I called in to pick Sam up to take him and Harv for a walk. Got outside mums and he promptly sat down and refused to budge. He was having none of it so I had to drag him back in as he didn't want to do that either. He then wouldn't go in the kitchen but just laid down in the hall. Anyway thought I'd leave him and go and get Harvey, gave him his walk then returned to mums, let Sam out the back he did a wee then was squatting again for around 10 mins trying to go, only managed a small squit. Going to pick Hlly up from school in a minute so will try again to walk back to our when we get back but if not will have to leave him, mum and dad are expected back by six so wont be too long. Anyone else had this reaction before? |

Never witnessed a reaction myself but stopped using pharmaceutical worming preparations 5 years ago after hearing of a similar reaction. Basically worming preparations contain a poison, it's in small quantities but dogs can and do, on occasion react to them. If it were me I'd take Sam back to the vets. If it is a reaction he needs to keep his fluid levels up but I'm sure it will all clear up quickly though. |

Thanks Rose, I did cook him some plain rice which he wolfed down this afternoon, but still parking his bum at every opportunity, dad has been phoning, should be home around 6pm. |

Mum phoned when they got home to say that he was still the same laying down in the hall. Its funny because he did seem to be acting like Harvey does when he has a bad bout of wind (suddenly sitting down) and I did wonder if that was the case although smells were very much absent :phew: I think they'll see how he is in the morning, surely these effects should have worn off by then :crossedfingers: |

He's still the same Rose, this is the tablets he had Sherley's. Dad took him back to the vet this morning, again they examined his back end, felt his stomach and nothing seems amiss. They have just said to see how he goes over the weekend. Dad phoned Sherleys and spoke to one of their vets who was most concerned. Said it is very rare for reactions and is usually in pups or senior dogs if at all. In these cases it can be that worms have detached themselves and have caused a blockage, they are phoning back on Monday to see how he is. The blockage is my parents concern as again he attempted to go to the toilet but only managed a small amount after around 10 mins of straining. If he's the same tomorrow dad will insist on X-rays. He has been drinking and eating his again today. |

sherleys is the patent medicines that you can buy in pet shops.they make various things but tbh i wouldnt use them as they arent much good.if you want a proper wormer then go to the vet and buy one.theyre stronger and will work better.the stuff you get in a pet shop is considerably weaker mainly because its an over the counter medicine so obviously wont be as effective as one you can buy from a vet.i personally wouldnt use any of sherleys products either wormers or flea products. ;) |

Sam is a little better today, he went to the toilet this morning :yay: This afternoon mum and dad took him out with Harvey and he seemed fine until he went in the water he came out and sat down refusing to move. Imagine he's still quite tender, dad ended having to go and get the car to get him home in. Hopefully though he is on the mend :crossedfingers: |
