I have noticed recently Brandy is a bit stiff in her back legs, mainly after a sleep. She has totally had a routine change on weekdays since she comes to the office with me and is walked in the mornings as her main walk of about 45 mins. Then after work walk depending what I am doing horse wise she gets another 15mins-45 mins. This is either the same as it was before or if she gets a long walk in the evening nearly double. The only other change is its in the morning rather than a evening main walk. Weekends are the same as they were before - about 1.5 hours. She just seems a bit tight in her muscles and been stretching a bit more then waddling then ok. I have also upped her food as the change or extra work has made her loose a bit of weight. She is 7 in Sept, and I was wondering if it may do her good to be on joint aid or something? But am a bit dubious about putting her on any supplements as I am not sure about pumping them full of things when they should be ok on their complete food! |

Sounds like an age related slowingdown coupled with the changes in her daily routine. When she was left at home I'm betting she slept for hours, she's probably moving round a lot more in the office even if not going for walks? Keep an eye on her,if it gets worse a vet checkup to test the flexibility of her joints maybe called for. OK Daisy is a lot older than Brandy now but she tends to potter more on walks rather than have a long one, she'll sit with me while I play ball with Duncan. Wouldn't go for joint-aid yet but green lipped mussel I swear by for stiffness, won't do any harm at all and may just help her. |

Thanks Lynne, I will look up that, never heard of it, is it a supplement? I think its age related too, and seeing her against a puppy Twig prob makes it a bit more obvious! Altho she does give her a run for her money in a game of chase!! :hyper: Edited by Nic, Jun 25 2009, 11:19 AM.

Both my dogs have two supplements to their food, one for joints and one for their probiotics. Complete food has to go by what the 'average' dog needs, so you could try moving to a senior food now, but if she's lost some weight it won't help her put it back on. It could even be that 'oh my I ate too much' stiffness we all get after a big meal if you are feeding her more. Try splitting the meals up a bit more to see if that makes a difference. As zandd says, she may be more active around the office because there is more going on, so it might just be that her muscles are now working more so have to catch up a bit and the stiffness may go away once her fitness has improved. PS Saw her in Your Dog again. :yippee: |
