our free kennel club insurance runs ut in two weeks and I've been looking around at other quotes as the kennel club is expensive! (£30 a month) However there are so many other options has anyone got any advice please? It seems Supermarkets have the best deal but they are not animal specialists, does it matter? really not sure. what a minefield, thanks emma and eric |

Hi there, It does matter yes, as you can't compare insurance on just the cost. It's like insuring your car for Third Party only then wondering why you can't get any money when it is stolen. You have to work out what you want from your insurance, ie, limited cover, which may run out per 'condition' after either time or a certain amount of money, or just won't cover the condition a second time, which may suit you if you are likely to change companies frequently, or if you want ongoing conditions to be covered each and every time, forever (although I'm not sure any do exactly that, but I think you get the point) in which case you have to pick your insurance company carefully as once you've made a claim of any sort you'd have to consider staying with that company as that claim would be very likely to be excluded by a new company. If you chose to stay with a company because you've made a claim that you might need to repeat they can then charge what they like for your premiums each year. I don't have pet insurance, and haven't since the first year I had a dog of my own when they were going to double the premiums after I claimed for an injury. It's too complicated! |

Pet insurance is an absolute minefield now.As Linda says so many different options available,I was with Sainsbury's for a long time and very happy with them. You need to check what cover limits are, some will insure for a set amount per condition and whilst that may sound high at say £5000 now if you have a dog develop a lifelong condition that amount will be eaten up very quickly,so look instead for a maximum amount per year. But what you will also sadly find is that most companies will hike up their premiums once you've been with them a couple of years - and you're caught because if you decide to transfer to another, cheaper one they won't cover you for pre-existing conditions. PetPlan is one of the best BUT is expensive and they do have a history of bumping premiums.I'm with Healthy Pets but have never claimed. Something else to watch is whether they will pay the vet directly or you have to pay then reclaim the money from the company - that could be very expensive. |
