Nov 1 2006 He's a lovely fella, but he's knocked down my two year old nephew, and his claws do actually hurt and can damage frail skin. Fred still jumps up crazily, but he's got a lot better. The mention of my nephew above was just one in a line of approaching small kids and jumping up, then knocking them over. It wasn't all his fault - sometimes the kids would approach us when he was onlead before I could stop them, and of course with jumping short leads don't help as the dog is going 'up' not 'away'. Anyway, he had knocked a couple of kiddies over, and one awful time when the mum picked the kiddy up Fred jumped and nipped his fingers. Anyhoo, I worked very, very hard on that, and have seen such a huge improvement (although I wouldn't trust him up close as the risks to him are too great), he doesn't run up to littles any more like he used to. Today, I saw some littlies coming, he was off lead so I looked around to call him in close, and he was already closing in, little eyes glued on me, to walk by my side past the hazard. I hadn't said a word...     |

Well, wouldn't say it's been trained out of him, I think close up he might still be tempted, but I've been able to keep him at a distance that doesn't trigger the behaviour by teaching him to focus on me instead. I was just so pleased that I'd finally turned the distraction into the cue as a lot of my books say is possible! |
