I noticed this morning that Archie has torn one of his dew claws :ouch: I have no idea when / how he did it - there is no blood anywhere, he's walking ok and he is only licking at it every now and then. But there definitely is a 'pink bit' visible after the end of the broken nail - I assume that is the quick. I was thinking of putting wound powder on it and bandaging it up, but I know that would just make him worry at it more. As its not bleeding and showing no sign of infection, should it be ok just to leave as long as it doesn't deteriorate? If it gets worse or he starts to look bothered by it I will call the vets (why do these things always happen on bank holidays  ) |

Awww poor Archie! I'd be tempted to leave it alone myself. If it's not open and he's not licking it I'd imagine it will be ok :err: |

Thanks Laura. I think it needs to keep the air on it as much as possible so that it dries out / the end hardens up. If he worries at it constantly I'll bandage it. This means he'll have to skip his medicated bath, I'll just have to spot wash the hot spots. Don't think he'll complain  |

Beauty did this a while ago, I took her to the vet as it was still hanging there. He snipped it off (bargain price of a tenner!) as I wasn't brave enough and told me to just leave it alone to heal. If you feel you want to do something, maybe plonk his paw in a bowl of saline, should be enough to give it a wash. |

It'll heal quick enough Claire, wouldn't worry too much about it. |

I've had a close up look, and what I can see is the quick surrounded by a very thin layer of nail. What his dew claws tend to do is shed the end leaving a short piece of black nail behind - I guess in this instance he's just shed a lot more than normal. Thanks for all the advice! |

Glad he's ok - Milo's done 3 of his claws in 2 months - he did his dew claw again early this week - he tends to tear them both sides so that they still stay intact and the wick is raw and showing - normally the claw dies off and you can just snip it off - only this time he went hairing after his ball 24hrs later and ripped the claw right off - he now has 7 claws and 3 stumps! |
