As some of you may already know Toby is not well. In a space of a few hours yesterday he went from being his normal nutty self to a lethargic crying wreck! At about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon I noticed that he was just lying around and shivering. His stomach went huge and hard and when I tried to stand him up he was very hunched. His back end also smelt vile. Phones the vets and they told me to take him straight down. After a thorough check up the vet was convinced it was just his intestine full of gas and we were heading for a smelly night. He had 3 injections, anti-biotic, painkiller and 1 to stimulate his gut. Well, jade slept with him downstairs and he's done nothing but cry all night. His tummy is not as swollen and is definately not hard but he seems to be having tummy cramps. Will see how he goes and might take him back but don't know whether to leave it a couple of days or not. Do you think I should give him anything to eat was thinking of some white fish and rice, or should I leave him. Also he has got the runs really bad, it's literally shooting out of his bum! :help: (sorry)! |

Ooh, bless him. I have never experienced anything like this so hopefully someone here will give you some sound advice. My thinking is if you are that worried give the Vet a call, he may want to see Toby again or he can tell you this is a normal reaction??? and :crossedfingers: he'll soon be back bounding about as normal  Edited by Lu20, Sep 10 2009, 09:44 AM.

I AM NOT A VET But generally I don't feed dogs if it's that's bad until it stops, and I've unfortunately had a lot of experience with violent runs this summer. :( But if he's had something to stimulate his gut he may need feeding. I would give the vet and ring and ask for a quick chat to see if he can advise over the phone or if you need to go in again. Some probiotics might not go amiss at this time, the vet should have a paste that you can use, although you can buy various different types of them from pet shops or online. I'd check first, just in case. Poor boy! |

id check with the vet before giving any food you might do more harm than good.see what he says.make sure hes got fluids ie water to drink so he doesnt get dehydrated, sounds a bit like bloat but it must have been caught in time? :err: |

With bloat consult the vet every single step of the way. Don't worry about being a pain in the butt, telephone or take him to the surgery if you so much as have a query. Bloat can be an extremely, serious condition - not saying it is in Toby's case but it's something that's much better to be over vigilant than not. |

I mentioned bloat when I went and to be honest they made me feel as though I was being a bit neurotic. She said that it was very very unlikely that a dog of Toby's size would have bloat as it's normally a condition that they see in big dogs. I will ring tomorrow and see one of the vets who I normally see because when you go late on in the afternoon they have the very young vets on (not that I don't trust them) and they don't know my dogs where as the vets on in the morning do. |

yes bloat is seen more in the large breeds amd some breeds are especially prone to it but that doesnt mean they CANT get it.i dont think its bloat as you have to act very quickly with this as its a life threatening thing so if it had been bloat he wouldnt have survived this long.i too wont trust the young vets as ive had problems in the past like my old female cat who had not long been in season and the young vet who examined her didnt even ask when she had her last season and if i hadnt gone back the next day she would have died as it was pyrometra :err: my old vet knew as soon as he saw her.sometimes you want experience not that your dog is going to provide it for some young vet wet behind the ears.let them cut their teeth on other peoples animals i say ;) |

I agree with you Roo Roo. I have phoned the vets and he is booked in to see the senior vet who normally deals with my dogs . Have been advised not to feed him until I speak to the vet tomorrow. |

I think that the best thing to do. Being me, I'd tell the vet about being made to feel neurotic about voicing a perfectly reasonably concern. After all, in it's essence bloat is just trapped air in the stomach. |

:phew: My boy is better :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: . Didn't take him to the vets I phoned this morning and spoke to the vet and she said if I was happy with how Toby was then don't take him. Like she said I am the one who knows him best and if I am happy then so was she. So he's had a play this morning and a run around the garden and vocally he has made up for the noise that he didn't make yesterday  . Going to make sure he still rests today just to make sure he is completely over it. Thank you all for your advice and good thoughts we appreciate it. :flower: |
