Eric has suddenly started humpy martins leg! (my boyfriend!)
He doesn't do it to me and it seems so sudden, plus he has become bitey at the same time.
He did it so much tonight we couldn't take him for a walk as he just kept humping Martin.
any advice and why does he do it when he's still so young (5 months)

thanks emma and eric

He does it because it fun! As with anything you don't want him to do, don't let him. Just place him gently back on the floor without reacting and though he very likely will always fancy doing it, he'll quickly learn it's not going to get anywhere!

It can be frustration behaviour, I've seen it in terriers before, then escalating into mouthing as well, as the frustration behaviour is then frustrated.

There are games you can play with dogs to teach them some self-control which I assume will also teach them to deal with frustration. You could try some and see if it gets better?

Otherwise 5-6 months is when testosterone kicks in, so could be he's feeling horny and is reaching for the nearest appropriately shaped article to grab hold of? Is he starting to cock his leg?

not cocking his leg yet, but has started mouthing a little at the same time as humping.
He hasn't been humping at all today so just wait to see what happens.

He'd be an incredibly advanced young man if he was cocking his leg at 5 months! Mouthing and humping go together (a mating dog does naturally with a bitch), it's not a big thing, they'd be a little abnormal if they didn't do with the amount of hormone coursing through his doby at the moment!

Well, I was thinking he might be 5 months and 27 days old. ;) Nearly six months! I can't remember if any of the young dogs I've looked after have been cocking that young, but I have seen it at 6 months.

Out of interest, what are the games to teach self control? I know a few dogs who could do with some of that...!

It's about getting your dogs excited with a toy and playing nicely, then taking a break from the playing and making them wait before it starts again. That's not a very good description, but if I get a chance to write something properly I'll put it on my blog and post a link.

Could be that he might be asserting his dominance.

I would give him a firm NO and distract him with his favorite toy so that he learns it is not acceptable behaviour.

As everyone says - perfectly normal part of growing up when you are a male terrier!!!

You need to stop him before he starts the actual humping! Keep a close eye on him and when he gets his 'humping-face' on and makes a beeline for a leg, say a firm 'No!' and then as soon as he turms to look back at you, distract him with something more acceptable.

If you wait until he's humping his little heart out before you tell him 'no', he might think you are shouting encouragement or joining in the fun!

He will grow out of it (eventually) Again, whoever sold you Eric should be available to answer all your questions about bringing him up. If they can't, or won't, could you drop me a PM? As a breed club (and especially from a rescue perspective) we feel it is important that all breeders take responsibility for providing advice and back-up to anyone they sell a puppy to. Please don't be worried about ringing the breeder. A good breeder will be only too happy to hear how Eric is doing and that he's in such a good home :) Sorry if you have already spoken to the breeder - I just thought I'd mention it, in case you hadn't.

PS - we need more picture (not of him humping - just looking cute will do!)

Davey takes me napping on the sofa as encouragement! Bless his heart though, even then he targets a cushion but the expression on his face - so happy!

thanks everybody for your advice Eric has stopped humping everything apart from his bed which we try to stop, but I must admit he just looks at us then with a cheeky look on his face that says oh I was enjoying that!
He is doing very well but is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo stubborn. we are trying to get him to do things with using treats but he really will only do it when he wants to which is somthing we are working on.
He has been bitey again which is annoying as he has a few big teeth now but again been giving him other things to chew but his attention span is so short.

I don't think Eric is struggling with life at all.... Its me! I've been back at work for three weeks (i'm a teacher so had a lovely holiday with Eric) but i never understood how hard it is to leave him every morning! I am completely smitten by him and do spend a lot of the day thinking about him, luckily we have friends and family who come and walk him every lunchtime, but i just want to work part time and spend time being with me......Why did noone warn me!

Oh bless - we've all been there!

He's at a real bitey stage - loosing teeth and putting through his adult ones, poor guy his mouth hurts. I'm of the firm belief that during this stage is practically impossible for them to focus on anything - one day their ears are up, the next their down - they get the runs and all because they're putting their teeth through. Lets face it we'd find it pretty difficult to focus as well. Your doing exactly the right thing giving him lots of acceptable things to chew on. He'll soon be all grown up, enjoy the puppy time it'll be over in no time!
