Advice needed. Took Milo to a show today. On jumping into the boot of the car he appeared to hurt his foot and was limping on it. The show had a PDSA vet wagon there doing free vet checks so took him to see the vet who checked his paw but couldn't find anything. It got better as the time went on. Took him into a class (more about that in General Chat) and he was ok. Then we had a big break between the next class so we lay on the grass, chilled out extra and were having a really good day. I took him for a walk and to play ball and when i threw his ball and he raced off to catch him he suddenly yelped and took all the wait off his back leg - he appeared to be in a lot of discomfort so i checked his leg all over. I sat down with him for a while then notice that the elbow area was swollen (noticeably more so than the other leg) so i took him back to the PDSA vet who said to take him home, rest him and put a cold compress on it. As anyone's dog done anything like this and any advice. I'm so so gutted as we were having a really good day but he comes first. |

Sounds like you've already been given pretty good advice. Shame it happened when you were having a lovely time but hopefully with rest and the cold compresses taking the inflamation down, he'll be back to normal in no time. :crossedfingers: |

Well just picked my boy up from the vets. Took him for his appointment this afternoon, sods law he hurt his leg again getting in the car. Vets weren't sure what it was but weren't happy with it so kept him in for xrays. Just picked him up, there is nothing evident on the xrays except for a lot of soft tissue swelling on the injured leg. They are a little baffled as to how quickly it happens etc as soft tissue swelling would indicate a knock of some kind and he def hasn't done that plus the swelling is on the outside so if he'd knocked it getting in the car the swelling would be on the inside. Its as tho he's twisting/stretching/pulling a muscle when his leg is stretched out full. Anyway, he's got metal splints on his leg to restrict the movement and is all bandaged up and is currently sparko on a sofa cushion on the floor, he's gotta go back Friday for a check and keep the bandage on for THREE weeks (anyone know any mental stimulation games!!). And i've gotta find £226 before the end of the month to replace the bill/rent money i've had to use! |

Just to update - we've been to the vets FIVE times in NINE days!! He has to have his leg re-bandaged every 3-4 days (and we have to make the odd extra trip ie when he chewed it all off, and last nite when the whole bandage just slipped off!). The vet is concerned that the swelling hasn't gone down that much and they are now talking about tendon damage - possibly weakened tendons in both legs. To try and help the swelling go down he is now restricted to NO off lead activity except when he's in the house - he even has to go on the lead to go in the garden! Bless him he's being so good but is so bored (as am i!!!). |

Thanks Roo Roo that'd be really helpful. I'm punishing myself cos i keep thinking what will happen if we don't find a solution to this as i'm worried that it will happen again as its happened to both legs now (although it wasn't as bad with the other leg) only next time he could do some really serious damage. |

Thank you. We've been back to the vets this morning and i'm so angry/upset. They've re-bandaged his leg, i couldn't see any reduction to the swelling, also for some godly reason she'd put tape directly on his leg and when the vet pulled this off its taken some of his skin off, he was licking his leg like mad poor baby! Anyway after she'd done his leg i went to pay (in the past i've had to pay £4.00 for the re-bandaging) and got told it was £27.00!!! I was fuming - apparently I am now going to be charged a consultation fee every time they rebandage the leg - even tho he's not having a consultation as such!! Also i was charged £5.00 for the metal splints from his visit on Wednesday - just to point out we had to go back on Wednesday as his bandage came off completely (ie it slid off his leg) - and it had only been done 24hrs prior - anyway both the metal splints had broken and they've charged me for that!!! How is that my fault if they've broken after 24hrs!! Also i've been really really strict with him this week and am even putting him on lead to go to the garden so his movements couldn't have been more restricted. I had to pay it but have asked for the surgery manager to call me. I'm also really upset as if its gonna cost me £22 every time i take him (twice a week at the mo) i can't afford that as that's all i have left a week for food etc. Plus i've just found this online You do not wrap tendon injuries, it can cause more damage by forcing the tendon to lay the wrong way and other reasons as well. If i thought it wouldn't jeopardise his healing i'd take the bloody bandages off!! Someones told me to not bother going back to the vets but to concentrate on getting him hydrotherapy as also with the leg being bandaged the tendons will need restretching and retraining and that's not gonna happen whilst he's bandaged up. The xray showed soft tissue swelling - this may never go down so how long am i gonna have to keep going back for. Sorry if this sounds hard but i'm upset/angry and i just want whats best for Milo but i have to eat too. |

It must be so frustrating! I was charged about £25 every time Beauty's bandages were changed as well, they were done every 3 days. I did some changes myself at home - they didn't last as long as the nurse's, but at least I was saving a bit of money. I hope they get it sorted out soon. Can you ask for a second opinion of treatment? |

Hi, firstly sorry about the rigmarole your going through. Is there any possibility you could post some photos of the leg (one from the side, one from the back and one from the back with both legs in view along with any other photos that you may think useful?) Is the soft tissue swelling round and confined to the top of the hock joint or elsewhere? Have you been given any steroids or anti-inflammatories? First thoughts to me are ligament damage / rupture. Wherabouts in the country are you? I may suggest a second opinion but I reassure you it'll be less costly than your current vet check-ups but it may involve you travelling. Jac |

Oh also if the practice manager rings up, ask them to give a specific diagnosis on the injury (write it down if you have to) also it would be worth asking them exactly what the purpose of treatment is supposed to achieve. Again make notes, along with your previous vet visits incase you feel the need to take this further. (I'll give you details if I think it's justified later) Don't kick off with them yet, it may be a matter of poor communication with yourself and the treatment you've received appropiate for the condition. |
