Brandy throws me so much.....she will not walk in the mornings, she will sniff and literally cover about 12ft in 10 mins cos she is sniffing and just standing still, looking about etc, she refuses to do certain walks, and even in the evenings when she is usually co operative, she has started lagging behind....starts me worrying there is a underlying problem....UNTIL woooooooossshhhhhh in the evenings she will be miles behind and all of a sudden come tearing up towards me and Twig and uses what must be pent up energy out on hanging off my trouser leg or chasing poor Twig who although loves a game finds her a bit scary! I doubt its anything medical as she goes crazy in the evenings every day, but I am at a loss for the non crazy evening time and especially the mornings. I work 9-530 and will works 8-530, I get up at the same time as him and therefore have a whole hour to spend with Brandy-as Twig goes to work with Will, but its so wasted, she just wont walk! Trouble is its been ok until now when the clocks will go bk and we'll have dark walks, where she wont be able to let off her steam in the evenings! anyone have any experience with non morning dogs, or dogs who wont do certain routes? I am at a loss and debating either takin Twig to work with me who will love morning walks, and giving Brandy 2 days of no proper walks as she wont walk in morns, and giving them to twig or even a dog behaviorist, Its just impossible to exercise her unless its on her terms which cant happen in the winter!!! Twig is so normal, she likes walks, any time anywhere, Brands is such a princess and its all on her terms or nothing!! |

How odd Nic,don't think I've ever heard of such behaviour before. How big is your garden,do you have an open space nearby? Just wondering if rather than taking her for a walk in the morning you just let her potter around in a smaller space, will she then become hyper during the day, somehow I doubt it,may just be worth giving it a go? Daisy potters a lot on our walks now but that's because she's getting older. |

I think I sort of understand. Boo if left to her own devices could take half an hour to cover 10 meters, she sniffs, she sniffs it again, then she backtracks to sniff something that she's already sniffed for 10 minutes. When she's in this mood (and thats pretty much 24 hours in the day) she's an absolute pain in the butt - if I carry on walking normally she'd quite happily lag behind for as long as she wants to. It's her Miss Marple mode. I can be totally out of sight and she's as happy as larry, no urgency at all. When she eventually decides to catch up with us - just like Brandy - whoosh. The way I manage to get her to walk at an acceptable pace off lead is to walk behind her, when she stops I bump her bum with my leg and give her a push on - somedays we can do a whole 2 hour walk like this! Somedays it'll be just once or twice. Boo never cuts me any slack at all - just the mere hint of me not being on the ball and her agenda takes over. |

Refusing to do certain walks could be related to 'trauma' she has experienced there? Not wanting to walk in the mornings, she's just not a morning girl? I walk a labradoodle, and every since a small puppy she's been murder on walks. More interested in sitting down than walking. She's got a bit better now she's walking with a group, but still a lot of the time she prefers to just sit down. If she was mine I'd be off to the vet to make sure there's no physical problems, and probably would with Brandy too. Maybe she stiffens up overnight with lack of movement and during the day she limbers up and is raring to go. Fred lags behind all the time these days, so different from the dog who'd go off with other people and I was forever chasing after him! I just leave him to it, and he catches up (eventually). |

Linda, she has done this for years now but seems to get worse the more she realises she can get away with it!! She is due her booster in November so I will bring it up then def! Tafia, thank you so much for your post, everything you have said is exactly what Brandy does!!! Maybe she has some Welsh terrier in her lol. I have tried the 'butt bumping' lol, and she gets REALLY annoyed then, and either just flies behind me, tail between her legs, stops dead or even soemtimes tells me off! It works more than most things, or I sometimes pick her up then carry her, put her down in a place she doesnt mind as much and she carries on....I Think its total stubborness to be honest, doesnt like mornings, and certain walks so wont do them! Isnt it funny Boo is the same tho? Its ok in wide open spaces but on lead or in more worrying places if she's miles behind it just gets so tedious! I will wait until November, ask the vet and see if there is anything health wise, but I doubt it as she is so alive in evenings, then may have to see if a behavourist can help as I need her to co operate in evenings else her walks will be very short :( |

In which case Nic you have my sympathies ..... Boo tries to control everything. She tries to dictate which direction we walk in by hanging back, where we sit down, everything! If she decides it's a good day to go to the beach, she'll refuse to go out of the back door and sit next to the front one. If I so much as show the tiniest bit of indecision I might as well pack up and go home. I see other people wandering along - dog at their side or running to catch them up and feel so jealous!!!! I know one other dog that does this and funnily enough he's a Welsh Terrier as well! |

Ahhh I am so glad to talk to u, nice to hear someone is the same situation!! Brandy does exactly as you have explained about Boo, but luckily it does tend to be in the mornings, evenings its just the she decides where we are going part, but at least she actually walks, unlike mornings!! I also feel jealous when I see other dogs just being normal, Twig luckily is normal, so at least I have one I can walk with nicely! Usually I just hardly bother in mornings as she is so stubborn, and then do long evening ones, but when winter starts thats when the problem gets annoying, I just find it so weird that I have a dog who sometimes doesnt want to be walked, and if so only on her terms, and all you hear is people saying how people dont walk their dogs alot, or leave them alone too long, I WANT to walk mine but she wont! Weird the other dog is a welsh terrier too! I dont know any other dogs like it...thats why I was thinking of a behavourist, never used one before, but not sure they will be able to do anything about it. |

Nic - I'm not sure with Boo it's got anything to do with not wanting a walk, it's more that she wants to do what she want's to do - FULL STOP! Benson in some ways is even worse in that he never, ever does the whoosh part. Can you imagine how frustrating that is? When he eventually decides to catch up it's done at a the slowest possible trot - but he's the most strong willed/self assured dog in a breed that specialises in it. A couple of years ago I was at our local train station one morning and who should come trotting along the platform as though he did it every day - Benson! So confident that one no batted an eyelid, the train pulled in, doors opened and he just hopped on - like an everyday commuter! Thankfully I'd charged down the platform, jumped on after him and got him off in time. No panic, no excitment, nothing - just Benson doing what he wanted to do. |

Sam is particularly like this at this time of year we've noticed. There appear to be more rodents about, or they are more obvious at this time of year. He spends ages in the long grass with his nose permanently to the ground quite oblivious to where we all are until suddenly he's aware we're some way off and then makes a bolt for it. He's always ready for his walks but really takes his time in sniffing mode, actually I prefer your term Rose, 'Miss Marple mode' |

Sally does this! It's gets worse as the mornings get colder and darker. She has always been the same, she doesn't like the cold or the wet or the dark, she especially doesn't like these things if it's the morning! My husband and I work similar hours to you and the dogs are left at home all day, Meg and Billy NEED a walk in the morning or they'll go crazy in the day! Sally will happily stay in bed if it's bad weather or dark. If I do drag her out she potters along and occasionally just stops in one place untill I'm really far away then she panics and catches up. I usually let her have her own way. Especially in the mornings. She sticks her nose out of the door when I open it to leave and if it's not to her liking she goes back upstairs to bed and burrows under the covers! Does Brandy need her morning walk? or would she prefer a lie in? If she needs to use up some energy in the mornings you could play games like hide and seek inside (saves muddy paws too!) |

Ahh another awkward sniffer and stopper!! Thanks for sharing yours with me, makes me feel better Brandy isnt the only one! The only reason the morning thing gets me down is I have time in the mornings in the light and I dont have any time in the evenings in the light, so its just awkward, bet then she is a terrier, what do I expect :P Maybe I will try the hide and seek thing, good idea, at least I can feel like she's done something then! |
