Masters tournament at Area51
February 9 at 1pm; registration opens at 11:30
Steamroller 2013 Master scenarios and rules: http://privateerpress.com/files/Masters_2013_Rules.pdf
Deathclock timers
Players required to use three 50pt character restricted lists with the Divide and Conquer list variant.
$10 entry fee (all going to first/second/third place prize support)

This is the masters format used in many national tournaments. Give deep thought to your lists and bring your 'A' game because you'll need it against the brutal players we have in North Texas.

Deployment will be done separate to deathclock and I will drop the green flag to start each round.

Rounds will be dependent upon participants

Bring your phones/devices to use as deathclock timers. I will have iPhone chargers available for use. Recommended app for iPhones (free): iGameClock.

I encourage non-veteran players to give this a shot, but only if you have a BIG pair. Every victory should be a point of pride.

I do not like planning ahead. I prefer the perfect move for the moment. The rest is up to my dice.

Out of curiosity, what are Rets bad matchups. They've done fairly well against my Skorne and the only time I've seen them have a truly bad run was against pHexeris's feat...which did a crazy number on their avg def/weaponmaster inf.

yup, pretty much stealth ... and out attritioning, pace changers (Lylith2, Caines, Haleys)

Infantry heavy Constance has been a surprising annoyance too

I takes a smarter man to realize an alterior motive once he has lost his 1st game (to dice mind you) and reconfigures to the next best prize :P

I really don't know how to plan against Rets bad matchups just yet, but feeling confident in my 3 lists.
That's exactly what happened to me at Clash, lost the first game because eCaine, without missing a single shot, managed to leave a Menoth battle engine with 1 HP left (after it had been shot by a hunter). The next turn the battle engine rolled double 6s to hit eCaine, used the last box to boost and kill itself, left eCaine with 3-4 hp left, then an Exemplar(Errant? the ones with the crossbows) rolled double 6s to hit to finish eCaine off. Was Incursion and was going to win by scenario fairly easily if I had killed the battle engine.

Had to shake that crap off and win the next ones to get 3rd. Point being, don't give up after losing 1 game. After you lose 2, sure, you can just have some fun at that point.

Madhammer + Kayazy (weeeee 4" templates everywhere) and Gorten + Kayazy (no blast, gg Archers) seem like they wouldn't be great matchups either.

You just pointed out one of my least favorite things about WM ... the rag tag crazy combos mercs pull off ... I'm an admitted theme dork though.

You'll notice how I subtly set Nick's opponents up with that Ret question on bad matchups. Muahahaha! That round of beers will be mine Alex, MINE!!!

Common misconception about Ret is total stealth weakness. ret has one overwhelming counter to stealth which everyboby seems to forget, and that is...

VYROS.

melee, melee counters stealth. sentinels are mat7, and outside of certain dick units, most stealth unit def is reasonably low. there are lots of permutations, but people assume ret is just a gunline, which is why people assume ret is terrible, too.

infantry heavy can be tough to deal with, but almost every one of our casters has an anti-swarm synergy that clears the field. kae has rift X 2, daemons+ravyn have huge range hellmouths, rahn has chain blast, ossyan has stormfall spam + hyperion boom. garryth has fuckall, but if he's fighting an enemy list for realsies, he's lost already.

Madhammer and gorten are actually two of adeptis rahns best matches. they simply cannot harm him, or close the distance. in lists that require AoE spam to really hit hard against infantry, rahn's builds, and even most builds which include disco or artificier, madhammer and gorten are pussycats. kayazy have the same weakness that all huge def stealth has, arm 11/12, which is prime for stormfalling deviations. 8 stormfalls can totally clear 6-10 kayazy with deviations from farther away than kayazy can run. conveniently, they also run extremely well with rahn.

ret's real disadvantage in my eyes isn't stealth, but immunity. immune to knockdown is huge against many ret lists, which require it to get you out of position, spending focus, and stuck away from us. the toughest games i've played, where it hasn't been a matter of "i'm a goddamn moron" has been against pigs and khador. two factions thick with immunity.

Offensive debuffs are also a pig problem, with only 2 offensive dispels available across the entire faction (ossyan's sword, eEiryss) something like parasite or crippling grasp can go on a high value target early and just never leave, simply because we can't get rid of it.

i know my weaknesses. i play lists that specifically prey upon the weak minded, who think ret is totally boned if we see nyss hunters or kayazy.

@ Nick ... good points but stealth is still the biggest issue for Ret. (haven't really come across the KD Immunities problem yet)

and as far as AOE immunity, havent really had that issue yet either, most RET AOES have some sort of extra thing that seems to get around that stuff for me (ex: causing fire on aoe weapons, and hyperion Crit effects ... then again, I apparently sold my soul to benefit from crit effects, they seem to love me)

And to specify the Stealth problem ... its not just general staelth ... its the lists tailored to benefit from it (see EGoreshade, ELylyth, Ekaya) I dare you to try that Vyros shit against EGoreshade without wanting to punch yourself in the sack!

And if that magic crap is one of your biggest concerns Nick ... whats with the Kaelyssa or Souless attachment hate?

Have you been playing a lot of people fielding the Mechanic UA?

Also, Zach is going to win this thing. I would wish him good luck but he really doesn't need it.

What does the card say?

"O Fish, are you constant to the old covenant?" "Ceterum autem censeo Carthaginem esse delendam"
