1. Be curious. Ask "why?" Cultivate your ability to wonder; question what you see, hear, and read - both inside and outside class.

2. Be patient. Don't expect every puzzle or problem to solve itself instantly. Divide your thinking into manageable steps. Find rewards in the process of thinking.

3. Focus. Move away from distractions. Remind yourself of what is important about your subject. Learn to enhance your powers of concentration.

4. Make connections. Look at how details tie together. Apply what you already know to new situations. Use comparisons, analogies, and metaphors to clarify difficult ideas.

5. Value other points of view. Look at issues from another person's perspective, and think about how to balance other perspectives with your own.

6. Tolerate ambiguity. Play devil's advocate, debating two opposing views if both seem to have merit.

7. Avoid jumping to conclusions. Focus on issues, not personalities. Admit your blind spots and examine your prejudices. Evaluate, don't judge.

8. Test the evidence. Be properly skeptical about all claims. Look for corroboration (verification) in other sources.

9. Be creative. Don't settle for obvious answers. Look at things in a fresh way: redesign, reinvent, reenact, and rewrite.

10. Write things down. Writing helps you clarify and stretch ideas. It can help you sort out your thinking and discover things you didn't know you knew. In addition, it can show you weaknesses in your thinking, what you need to learn.

11. Get involved. Read books, journals, and newspapers. Watch documentaries. Join a club or discussion group. Volunteer for activities that expose you to new perspectives.

12. Be open to new ideas. Approach thinking as an adventure, looking for discoveries along the way.
