Roleplaying 101 Quick Guide Characters: are perhaps the most important part of any RP. Sure, we all like googling smexy pictures of people, but when it comes down to it, it’s personality and character background that really make a story. Be creative! Characters aren’t only who they are because of their backgrounds and personality, keep in mind what kind of world you’re dropping them into--unless you’re really into those ‘21st-century teenage boy/girl gets dropped into Middle Earth for no apparent reason OMG’ kinds of things. Support Characters(NPC's): Are totally awesome! Really, they are. Because your RP will probably get old real quick with just two people; support characters give great support (no duh) and lend depth to your story, playing more than one developed character may be a pain, but hard work always pays off, trust me. Support Characters also a wonderful source of conflict. Conflict: is good. Conflict is what keeps a roleplay going. There are all sorts of conflicts: physical conflict/violence, interpersonal conflicts, situational conflicts and so on. If everyone gets on dandy for a hundred or so posts, you’ll probably get bored, your partner will too. Post Length/Detail: Longer is not necessarily better, if you address everything that your partner says in enough detail that they know where you’re going, then good. If you rant for six paragraphs and haven’t addressed anything relevant, then that’s just bad. Don’t do it. However, don’t one-line and neglect giving your partner enough to go on. Good Grammar and spelling: Is polite to everyone. It shows that you actually spend time on your posts and 'evry sentance dosnet look liek dis' is just great. Keeps everyone happy: the admin is happy, mods are happy, members are happy etc. Spellcheck's your friend, not much else to say here. Patience: is key! We all have our bad days and sometimes we don’t feel like posting every thirty seconds, and sometimes we get writers’ block. Patience! Also, it takes time to develop a good story, if you jump into action in the first 5 posts, then again, the thread probably won’t last long unless you have a good reason for the action. So just...in conclusion: Patience.Written by a good friend and rping comrade lucier. |
