He was heading into dangerous streets again, he knew. Pausing for a moment under one of the few, flickering streetlights, he switched off his phone. He already had four missed calls from Stephanie, his elder sister. She'd be angry when he got home. Not that he cared all that much. Having lived with her for nineteen years, he'd learned by now how to switch off whenever she felt like lecturing him. She thinks I'm still a kid...

He moved away from the light's blueish glow, back into the shadows. Here and there, in doorways and close alleys, he could just make out the odd poor soul with no home and no bed, huddled on the street's edge with the trash. In the darkness, the tiny orange embers of a cigarette seemed to move in mid-air. Seyne moved on. He'd walked this street of the inner city before, seen these beggars before. He wanted to go even deeper. He'd heard talk of the 'dark heart' of the city, of this place in the centre of it all that light couldn't reach. If rumour was true, the place didn't even have electricity. He found an almost morbid fascination with that idea. That even now people could still live in that way, even if the life they lived was wretched. He didn't tell a soul where he went on these nights, of course. His parents would be horrified... Steph would probably send him to an mental asylum, or something. But they needn't have worried too much. While his ideas may have been strange, Seyne wasn't stupid. He didn't come to these places without a gun. Thus far he'd never needed to fire it, though he'd drawn it more than once to warn those who got too close.

He walked on, and gradually the neon signs became more and more sparse, the streetlights less regular. Half of those that were there didn't work anyway. After perhaps an hour, it seemed very sound of the city had almost faded into silence. Suddenly excited, he broke into a run, plunging fearlessly into the blackness of a tight alley ahead of him. He was disappointed then, as at the end of the alleyway he could see a soft, white light. He decided to carry on, but after a few steps he halted abruptly, and looked around him. He looked down, up, to his left, to his right, behind him. It was all black. Only ahead the white light. "Stay away from the light". Isn't that what they always say? Yeah, in the movies. The light approached rapidly as he ran on, and soon he could see beyond the alleyway. The place beyond was bright; his heart sank a little. Then the close alley walls were gone, and he found himself standing in a small, deserted town square.

As he moved forward hesitantly, he saw that illumination of this place was not from any electric light. A nearly full moon shone overhead, veiling everything in silver. And in the centre of the square, a tall statue on a plinth stood. The statue was an angel, her hand reaching and her eyes staring heavenward; and she made all the more heavenly by the moonlight. But she was old. Seyne's hand brushed the rough stone as he walked in a slow circle around her, taking in her every carefully carved aspect. "What are you still doing here?" he asked softly. "No-one believes in God any more." He sat down beside the plinth. It must have been about 2AM, and tiredness was finally setting in. It was late summer, and the air was warm. "I think I'll keep you company, just for tonight." I shouldn't do this... but I'm tired... this is dangerous... I'm lost. He looked up one last time at the angel before taking off his long black coat and folding it for a pillow. Some would pray to you, and ask for the earth. I'm just asking one little favour. Keep me safe, just for tonight, yeah?

Everyone was cursing, throwing fists around, but Cain just moved through the crowd that fought in the bar, avoiding any hits, since humans would probably break their own knuckels if they hit Cain. He got to the bar, behind which stood the barman, trying to call 911 or something. Cain jumped over the bar, grabbed a bottle of whiskey from the shelves, jumped sideways to avoid a chair flying his way and merged with the shadows.

He found himself standing on the edge of a rooftop of a ten flat building. "Whoa!" He rocked slightly, almost falling off. Cain looked around. "Where the hell am I now? Seriously, I need lots of practice with this shadow walking thing." He sat down, opened the bottle and started gulping the whiskey down like it was water. The bottle was empty in no time, Cain lit a cigarette. "I'm still thirsty...". He just sat like that. His ears filled with the sounds of thousands of hearts beating throughout the city, his nose with the smell of blood of anything still alive. "Way too many hobos around. A drink would be great, but I don't wanna puke." Then he caught a scent of something fresh just under him in the alleyway. It was a white haired guy. He kept on running from someone or to somewhere. Cain stood up and jumped to the other direction than the one his prey was running in. "Hm...Doesn't seem that anyone's following him." With that thought Cain turned around and started following the guy. Soon they both reached a small square. In it's middle was a statue. "Wait...I saw it somewhere...The cave...S**t." Cain looked around. He didn't want to believe what he saw. The alleys that came out from the square and led to other parts of the city were covered in shadows. And in one those alleyways Cain saw at least one other unnatural. Everyone of them seemed like they haven't fed for days. "Holy mother of...They'll tear the kid apart!" The figures in the shadows started moving towards the kid. Cain jumped off the rooftop, spread his wings and glided forward landing a step away from the guy.
-Kid, wake the f**k up and stay close! We're up s**t creek here.- Cain said, unsheathing his sword.
Then he laughed slightly.
-You asked a fallen angel to keep you safe, huh? Well, you got your wish.
A divine vampire lunged towards Cain. He knelt, kicked off to the left and swung the sword, cutting the vampire in half. Blood splattered on Cain's face before the vampire's body disintegrated into ashes that flew straight at the white-haired guy.

Seyne had almost closed his eyes to the night when there was a sudden movement far too close to him.
"Kid, wake the f**k up and stay close! We're up s**t creek here."
He scrambled to his feet, his finger already on the gun's trigger. He was about to say something like 'Who the f**k are you?' or 'What the hell are you talking about?', but as his eyes took in the appearance of the stranger, he found himself lost for words. Wings. Horns. A long tail and an impossibly huge sword. This isn't real. I'm dreaming already.
"You asked a fallen angel to keep you safe, huh? Well, you got your wish."
What? "This wasn't exactly what I had in mind!" He heard the fear in his own voice, even though he knew this had to be a dream. The devil-man-thing suddenly leapt to the side, revealing another winged creature making a beeline for the two of them. The look on its face was savage, almost insane. The thing drew nearer at incredible speed, but his limbs didn't want to move. It was maybe a metre from him when the enormous blade sang through the air and straight through the creature's midriff, cleaving it's entire body in two.

Seyne could only watch in shock as the body crumbled into ash before his eyes. Suddenly something grabbed him painfully from behind, clawing at his neck and shoulder. Seyne didn't even look to see who or what the hell it was, he just fired that gun once, twice, three times over his shoulder until the thing let go. Panic was about to take him over; his heart was beating so hard and fast it felt like it'd beat right out of his chest. He knew now that this was no dream. His skin was still stinging where he'd been grabbed by... whatever it was. He looked round, looking for the devil-man. He was close, and Seyne ran to him for safety. "What are they?! What are you?" He half-shouted, his voice shaking. What the hell's going on?

-What are they?! What are you?- The kid shouted, though the air was caught in his throat because of the sudden shock.
-You're quick, kid. That's good.- Cain said, while pulling out his .454 casull.
Cain pushed it in the kid's other hand.
-Use 'em both.- Cain ordered the kid.
He took a few quick steps towards the vampire who bit Seyne, turned it around and swiftly shattered its spine by kicking the said vampire into the angel statue, breaking a few ribs in the process. The vampire coughed out blood. Because of the bullet holes, the vampire bled immensely and Cain soon stood in a puddle of blood.
-Don't even of think of bleeding everything out,s**thead! The kid will need it.
Cain grabbed the vampire by its neck and turned around. Other vampires were already swarming them from all sides.
-S**t!- Cain cursed. -We're taking the shadow express outta here, kid!
He jumped towards Seyne.
-Hold on!-Cain shouted, while grabbing the kid.
He merged them with the shadows.
They flew right out of a wall in Cain's apartment. Trish ran in out of the kitchen.
-I can't get a drink without you flying out of nowhere today?! And what's with this crap?!- She pointed to Seyne and the bleeding convulsing vampire.
-The pale guy's a new fish in the pond and that's his dinner.- Cain explained, while pushing himself off the ground.
Cain sheathed the sword and looked at the kid. The confusion, shock, fear in his face just irritated Cain.
-Damn...- Cain stood up, went to the kid and grabbed the casull out of his hand. -Give me my gun back.
-Oh,no. No. He just got bitten?- Trish said, gesturing to Seyne.
Cain didn't answer. He simply went to the kitchen and came back with a bucket.
-Just help me dry this bleeding f**ker.
Cain put the bucket on the ground, grabbed the vampire's left hand and tore it open. The flesh being torn, bones being cracked and blood being spilt to the bucket was only the start of a very long night.

Seyne's questions went unanswered, and he found a second gun pushed into his hand.
"Use 'em both."
He was shaking way too much to aim straight, but he fired a few shots where he could. His rescuer, if you could call him that, wasted no time in dispatching his attacker, breaking the thing's bones like sticks. If Seyne wasn't so distracted he might have been sick there and then from the revolting sound of the creature's body breaking and tearing. The stone angel's feet were red and glittering with blood; it was spattered over everything. Out of the shadows were coming more of these things, from all directions. A moment later the devil-guy was at his side again, and for a few seconds everything went black. The darkness lifted, and he found himself and the other in a small, dimly lit room. Seyne sank to his knees, shaking like a leaf on caffeine.

A woman came into the room, and spoke to the devil-guy. She seemed angry, but Seyne didn't register what she was saying. The man came and snatched his gun back, left for a minute and then came back with a bucket. Only then Seyne noticed the mutilated body of the creature that had attacked him, as the guy picked it up... and began tearing it apart. That was too much for Seyne. He felt dizzy, tried to suppress the reaction but was too late, and was sick right there. He's a monster. A bloody monster... He risked another glance over there. Blood was pouring in a thin, guttering stream into the bucket the man had brought. He looked away before it made him want to throw up again.

As he sat, trying to calm himself a little and ignore the repulsive sounds from across the room, he became aware of an increasing, stabbing pain in his shoulderblades. Just as he thought he couldn't feel any worse. He shut his eyes and bore the pain in silence for a few minutes, but it continued to worsen. He was close to crying out and bit his lip to try and stop himself, only to find more pain. A little blood trickled down his chin. Hesitantly he raised a hand and touched his teeth. His canines felt completely wrong; too long, too sharp.

He yelled pitifully as agony suddenly shot through his back again. He couldn't see anything, but the first bones of would-be wings had just pierced his skin. These stabs continued in a torturously slow pulse, the bones extending, flesh forming to cover them, and soon, snow-white feather began appearing to cover the new flesh. Seyne still had no idea. Never had he endured anything like this before. He didn't even try to hold back his crying and screaming as the process went on mercilessly. In the back of his mind, he began to hope he was dying.

Cain kept on filling up the bucket, half-ignoring the kid's screams as his wings started to form. "Just as quickly as it was for me."
-I know how it feels, kid.- He said, while tearing the head of the dead vampire. -Trust me, you're getting off easy. Some have to endure such transformation for weeks, months, even years.
Cain squished the decapitated head above the bucket, pieces of its flesh fell in it. "Half full. Could have been worse." Cain thought. Trish looked down at the floor and sighed.
-I'll get the whiskey. The kid will need it.
-Yeah, he will.- Cain said, looking at Seyne.
All the feelings gradually disappeared, leaving only a slight compassion. Cain went to Seyne, lifted him on his feet, threw Seyne's right hand over the shoulder and dragged the kid to the nearest sofa. Cain layed him face down and turned the head so Seyne could breathe.
-Don't move or you'll press the wings and it'll hurt a hell lot more.- Cain explained, went to the fireplace and started putting wood in it.
Soon the the wood was crackling from the fire. Cain started putting the leftovers of Seyne's soon-to-be meal into the flames. During that time, Trish came with a few bottles of whiskey and a few glasses. She filled them all half with blood and mixed it with whiskey, then glanced at Seyne. He was even paler, tears of pain were sliding down his cheeks, he kept on shaking from the torture he was subjected to. This went on for a while, until Cain slapped a bloody rag into the fireplace and closed the damper, as to avoid the sickening smell of a vampire's burning flesh. The bucket, glasses and bottles were standing on the table, throwing long shadows because of the fireplace. On one side of the table was the sofa Seyne layed on, on the other two armchairs. Trish was sitting in one and Cain soon took a seat in the other.
-So,what now?- Trish asked.
-I'm thinking. The kid's obviously bordering insanity. Not to mention he's only slightly conscious. All I can read in his head is a wish for this to be death.- Cain said coldly.
-Well, in a way, it is.- Trish said, sighing sadly afterwards.
Cain scratched the back of his head, stood up, took one of the glasses with blood and whiskey, came to Seyne and patted a few times on his cheek.
-Wake up and smell the ashes, kid! Here, drink this. It will help a bit.- Cain said.
No reaction. "Okaaaay...". Cain lifted Seyne in a sitting position, squeezed his jaw to make him open his mouth, lifted his head a bit and started slowly pouring the blood/whiskey mix down Seyne's throat.

He'd been moved somewhere more comfortable than the floor, though he barely noticed since the pain hadn't let up for a second. He opened his eyes a little and could see the orange glow of a fire, and hear the voices of the other two. Watching the flames provided a distraction, abeit a tiny one.

Someone was holding him, making him sit upright. His mouth was pressed open and liquid poured in; he only swallowed a little before half-choking but it burned on the way down. It seemed like alcohol, only it was thicker than that, with a metallic bite. Not good. Even so, Seyne reluctantly swallowed another couple of mouthfuls. After that... he wanted more. The glass was soon finished and as it was taken from his lips he wanted to reach for it and bring it back. Another came and he drank it down eagerly. The next, more slowly. He felt calmer already, and it seemed the pain in his back had somehow become a bit more bearable. He became a little more aware of his surroundings, his gaze falling upon the table just in front of him. Bottles of spirits sat there, along with a couple of emptied glasses. He thought it was weird how the glasses looked so red. Then he saw the bucket. Well, any idiot could have connected the dots. He just.. he just made me drink blood.. I just drank three glasses of blood.. three... "What the hell are doing to me?" Seyne's voice was hoarse from crying. This guy's a f***king psycho... "Why did you give me that??" he was starting to freak out now, and tried to move away from the guy but he hurt like hell as his back grazed the sofa. "Why!? S**t..." He was panicking again. What if.. he's gonna kill me. He killed the others.. tore that guy to shreds! What's to stop him doing the same to me..! F**k... He ripped the guy apart!

Trish chuckled and stood up.
-He's all yours, Cain.
-Now wait a mi-...- Cain started, but Trish was already out of the room.
Cain growled slightly, slapped himself on the forehead and slowly dragged the palm, streching the skin.
-Okay. First off, I'm not going to kill you.
-I might!- Trish shouted out of the kitchen.
Cain sighed.
-She's joking. Second, and this is the good news, you're a vampire. You had to drink the blood of the one who turned you or, well...you would be in that fireplace, too. Oh, another thing.- Cain leaned slightly towards Seyne, trying to make him feel even more uncomfortable.
Then he said in a half-tone:
-We can read minds.- Cain straightened himself, turned towards the balcony and sighed. -Listen, I know you're scared s**tless. I also know you take me for a psycho, but we're your best friends right now. If you run away, there are thousands of a**h*es who will undoubtedly make you their b***h...Erm, not literally, of course, though I wouldn't throw the second option through the window.
-And he's saying you this a nice way, kid. Trust me!- Trish shouted again.
-Anyway, I'll give you time to soak this up. There's a crap load of bad stuff you'll need to know too.- Cain said and went out to the balcony for a smoke.
Then he quickly poked his head through the balcony doors.
-And don't touch those swords on the wall or I'll kick your ass. You already have a bottle of Johny Walker blue on your tab here.- He said and closed the door.
"S**t. Nice job, Cain. Scared the kid even more." Cain thought to himself.

"...this is the good news, you're a vampire. You had to drink the blood of the one who turned you or, well... you would be in that fireplace, too. Oh, another last thing... We can read minds."
Seyne sat in silence as the other spoke. It was too unbelievable, but as he gently pressed the point of one of his new fang teeth, he began to wonder.
"Listen, I know you're scared s**tless. I also know you take me for a psycho, but we're your best friends right now. If you run away, there are thousands of a**h*es who will undoubtedly make you their b***h... Anyway, I'll give you time to soak this up. There's a crap load of bad stuff you'll need to know too."
This was a rough world he'd got into. After a warning not to touch the swords, which Seyne hadn't even noticed before, his new "best friend" went out to the balcony and lit a cigarette. Seyne turned away, gazing at the flames again for quite a while. For the first time since that guy had appeared, his heart rate was returning to normal, and that unparalleled pain was fading fast. A vampire, am I? He looked at the remnants of the blood glistening on the glasses. Is that why I wanted to drink that? Why I still...? He picked one up, turning it in his hand. There was still a bit left in the bucket. Hestitantly he dipped it in, filling it until it was about three-quarters of the way full. He placed the glass on the table, staring at the red liquid as the reflections of the flames danced on its surface. If he drank that now... he'd be admitting that he believed all of this. He grabbed the whisky bottle and took a gulp of it straight, following it with the whole glass of blood. Beautiful it was too. Beautiful and bitter, like black chocolate.

It was done. He stood up, pretty dizzy since the only things in his stomach now were blood and a copious amount of whisky. Also there was that extra weight on his back, the wings. He looked round at them and studied them, more fascinated now than afraid. He tried moving them, but that did still hurt so he left them be. He made his way to the balcony doors. "Never asked your name." he said, leaning against the doorframe for support, after all he was pretty drunk. Never gave you mine either. If you can read my mind, it's Seyne North. "Sorry I called you a psychopath, even if it was in my head... Guess you... did just save my life." But aren't vampires, like... undead? Am I immortal now...? What about stuff that's meant to kill vampires, sunlight, and crosses and all that other stuff? Since when did vampires have wings anyway? And you can read every thing I'm thinking, which is just... Honestly, if I could shut up inside my head, I would do it now.

Cain smirked.
-I didn't even finish the cigarette and you're already asking the million dollar questions, North. Well, crosses, garlic, holy water - top of the bulls**t list. Shots to the head only cause headaches. Stakes to the heart slightly paralyze you. We bleed as any human would, but we heal up pretty fast. So forget about hospitals unless you come looking for food. Some might sell you blood packs, but you need to have some pull around places. Hm,sunlight...I wouldn't run after a morning bus if I were you, so to speak. Would kill you now, but the stronger you get, the more immune you become.
Cain exhaled another cloud of smoke.
-And the wings? Guess you didn't read the good book. That's just what I think, though. Pretty useful to have a brainless cult around for some blood sacrifice when diner's being served.
Cain smirked again.
-Oh, and immortality. That's pure gold there.- Cain started sarcastically. -Take the right turns and you might just make it there. By the way, the name's Cain. And the beutiful girl inside is Trish. Welcome to the other side, I guess.
Cain looked at the sky and threw the cigarette butt.
-Sun's rising in a few hours. We need to get inside and you should get some rest. Tommorow you'll get the whole politics crap and a bit practice in hunting.- Cain said, stepping towards the balcony door, but stopped.
Cain looked down, then at Seyne.
-Do you have any family or relatives that would come looking for you, Seyne?

He knew my name, answered the questions in my mind. No amount of lucky guessing could have told him that. So, only sunlight. And that's not even permanent. "What about those others though? How did you kill them?" He was desperate to know it all, to know everything.

"By the way, the name's Cain. And the beautiful girl inside is Trish. Welcome to the other side, I guess."
"Thanks..."
"Sun's rising in a few hours. We need to get inside and you should get some rest. Tomorrow you'll get the whole politics crap and a bit practice in hunting."
That last thing... Seyne hadn't really thought that far ahead. That thought really should have scared him, and it did. But not enough. Beneath the initial dread, another emotion was surfacing. Excitement.
"Do you have any family or relatives that would come looking for you, Seyne?"
He looked at Cain warily, thoughts of the hunt disappearing at once. "Yeah. Yeah I do." She's probably called the police already... "Why?" What does it matter if they aren't going to find me?

Cain got slightly irritated and frowned a bit.
-Seyne, wake the f**k up. You're not human anymore. They might not find you, but you're putting them into a world of sorrow and almost inexistent, but still possible danger. Don't you want to at least say good-bye to them?
Cain caught something in Seyne's head. "Her?". He tried to dig deeper for a few seconds. "The hell I'm doing? Whoever she is, it's not any of my business."
-Anyway. You've got almost all the time in the world to figure things out.
Cain opened the balcony door and gestured Seyne to go through before walking through them first.
-We'll talk more tomorrow. I'll try to answer any other question then. Try and at least lay down. The wings shouldn't be so sensitive now. You get the sofa.- Cain said before continuing to the kitchen.

-How is he?- Trish asked when Cain came in the kitchen.
-He's taking it good. Got scared about revealing the new world to the kid? I thought women were supposed to have some sort of motherly/caring or whatever instinct in their blood.
-To their own kids, yeah. Besides, I get enough s**t trying to help you. I don't need any from some random kid.
-Helping me?- Cain laughed slightly. -It's you who's under my wing.
Cain took a few steps towards Trish and spread his wings forward, covering her from both sides.
-Literally.- He smiled.
Trish giggled.
-Maybe later, in bed.
-Lets try not to scare the kid more. We should concentrate on making him able to stand on his own feet.
-I'm not getting you sometimes, Cain.- Trish said and smiled. -But you're right. I'll give him the basics about the clans tomorrow. You teach him how to hunt. I'll take on the marksmenship training, you get the melee combat.
-If that's not some sort of freakish motherly instinct...- Cain started.
-That joke wasn't funny from the start.
-Yeah, you're right. But it frustrates you slightly.- Cain said grinning and lowered his wings.
-"But it frustrates you slightly."- Trish repeated in a mocking voice.
They both chuckled slightly.
-By the way.Have we got anything to eat?I'm starving.-Cain asked, opening the fridge's door.

"Seyne, wake the f**k up. You're not human anymore. They might not find you, but you're putting them into a world of sorrow and almost inexistent, but still possible danger. Don't you want to at least say good-bye to them?"
Seyne looked away, chastened. He didn't say anything.

"Anyway. You've got almost all the time in the world to figure things out. We'll talk more tomorrow. I'll try to answer any other question then. Try and at least lay down. The wings shouldn't be so sensitive now. You get the sofa."
"Thanks." For everything.

Seyne looked up at the moon for a moment before coming in, closing the balcony doors behind him. I guess that's my sun now. Maybe I'll never see the real one again. He walked slowly to the sofa and lay down on his front. He took his phone out of his jeans pocket; it was digging into his hip. He turned it on. Ten missed calls and two voicemail messages. He called voicemail. 'Seyne, where the hell are you? It's nearly midnight! I don't care what you're doing, just get home now!' He hung up there, tears stinging in his eyes. In those seven seconds he'd just realised that that could be nearly the last time he'd hear her voice. He started writing a text, though his hands were shaking. 'Everythings fine, dont worry. Im staying with a friend. Ill call you tomorrow k?' A tear slid down his face as he pressed 'send'. Hearing Steph's voice seemed to have thrust him back into reality, as he finally began to realise what he'd lost tonight. Everything. His family, his home, his life. All of it was gone. But hey, you get to live and drink blood for all eternity. Life isn't fair... why should death be any different? Seyne closed his eyes, exhaustion and alcohol finally joining forces. He was asleep in seconds, and stayed that way for every sunlit hour of the next day.

The time he stayed with Trish and Cain passed quickly for Seyne. Being semi-dependent on the two of them for most of his new life, he couldn’t help but come to like them. They were good teachers, even if they could seem harsh sometimes. Seyne learned fast, even beginning to take a little pleasure in hunting. Soon he was exploring the city alone again, just as he had done as a mortal, gradually spending more and more nights and days away from the apartment. One night he left a note to Cain and Trish, thanking them for everything they’d done, and that he’d found a way to White Moon. He took his old gun and a sword, and didn’t return.

White Moon was where he stayed for seven months. He trained hard and spent many hours researching the other clans, leaving little time for anything else, so becoming seen as something of a recluse. But even here, Seyne was becoming restless again. In the last two months he was only showing up at the clan for his fight classes and for blood when he needed it. By now he was well aware of the possibility of this impending war and was anxious to be away from the clan. Just what was it but another faction? If war came, Seyne would not fight for this clan. He had found a place in Arakesh, and after some negotiation with Golden Moon, had obtained a killing license. He was free, and on his own mission: to find Cain Rockfall. From all that he’d learned, it was clear that that half-breed was at the centre of all this. Seyne knew of the two half-breed clans that existed, the problem being that one had apparently just been evacuated after an attack, and the whereabouts of the other were pretty hazy. All he could find was that the place used the guise of a hospital. It was a long shot, but he was going to try looking around Arakesh first.
