“I hope you will be able to join us for a drink when you’ve finished here. Any problems just ask DS Carter; he’ll be around to help you.”
Millie nodded attentively to each and every word spoken secretly wishing the invite had been extended so she too could join new team before the end of her shift.
“Oh and Millie”
“Yes Guv?”
“Welcome to the team.” The corner of DI Manson’s mouth rose to almost a smirk before turning his back on his latest recruit. That was the closest Millie had got to a warm welcome all day. She hadn’t been the most popular candidate but up against Sally for the role of trainee DC it hadn’t come as a complete surprise. Hopefully her colleagues would be more welcoming when the other new, more experienced, DC arrived. Thanking the DI Millie swivelled around in her black office chair to continue with her phone calls. A chimp could do this job, all she had to do was find the elusive pizza delivery boy who had witnessed an accident in Canley High Street, it wasn’t exactly rocket science. She picked up the phone receiver ready to dial the first pizzeria in the phone directory.
“If you need me I’ll be on my mobile.” Max tapped his jacket pocket as if to prove that he was indeed contactable. “I’ve just got a couple of errands to do. If this new DC gets here tell him he’d better have a bloody good excuse for being late on his first day or he could be looking at the shortest transfer in history.” Millie knew Max’s errands involved several swift halves with everyone else in the Rose and Crown but she didn’t care, Max had just entrusted her to be in CID alone, any problem now phoned through and Millie would be the first detective on the case.
“I’ll be fine thanks. Oh hello this is Trainee Detective Constable Mille Brown from Sun Hill Police Station would it be possible for me to speak to your manager please?”

“Oh this is ridiculous!” A frustrated Millie had dialled every number on the list and a few who weren’t and the delivery boy had still not been found. Surely someone must know of an albino teenager with a limp who spoke with an Italian accent when dealing out his deliveries.
“You okay love?”
Millie spun round in her chair to find the owner of the cockney accent: a suited brunette sat at the desk behind her, her feet resting up on the recycling paper bin.
“Urgh sorry I didn’t hear you come in. You must be the new DC. It’s my first day in CID too. I’ve been left with such a simple task and I can’t even do that properly. I’m going to be a laughing stock. Oh sorry where are my manners? I’m the new trainee DC, Millie Brown.” She wiped her hand on her beige jumper before outstretching her arm to shake the brunette’s hand.
“Well it’s nice to meet you Millie Brown. Don’t worry I’m sure your first day as a trainee can’t be as bad as mine. Now what’s the problem. Lets see if we can sort it out before everyone gets back. I suppose they are all down the pub?”
Millie gave out a laugh, “how did you guess?”
“I’ve been to Sun Hill before, popped in from time to time in the line of duty you know how it is. They might have done a bit to the building work but I doubt things have changed that much.” Millie liked the new DC compared to her chilled attitude Millie was going to shine.
“I had best warn you, DS Carter is on the war path I hope you have got a good reason for being late.” Millie said returning the favour.
“I’m not late! Nothing good ever came from being late for work I once learnt that the hard way. Now lets get back to the problem in hand shall we?”
“Yes,” Millie didn’t want to be caught gossiping on Max’s return. “I’ve phoned all the cafes, pizzerias and take-aways in the book, not one of them have seen this mysterious delivery boy. It’s as if he’s been beamed down from outer space to witness this accident and then spirited off again.”
“I’m sure there’s a more reasonable explanation for his disappearance. Let me see the list of numbers you’ve called.” Her smile was friendly, relaxed, for the first time that afternoon Millie felt at ease in the knowledge that between them they would solve the problem. And she could put out of her head nonsensical ideas of first day pranks or supernatural causes for the mysterious disappearance of her witness. It may be Halloween but even Sun Hill didn’t have a resident ghost witness! She handed the list over scolding herself for allowing her over active imagination to run away with itself.
“Have you tried Luigi’s? He knocks out pizzas in the kitchen of his converted flat on the Jasmine Allen Estate. I’ll write down his number but I’d advise you to not order anything more than garlic bread unless of course you want to spend the next fortnight attached to a drip in St Hughes!”
“How do you know all this?”
“My father’s Italian, used to live on this manner.” She gave Millie a wink. “Go on give Luigi a call and if he can help we’ll tell your DS Carter it was all down to your stringent detective work. Now I’m off for a quick wander see how the old place has changed. I won’t be long.”
Millie didn’t need telling twice, she dialled the number scribbled on the post-it. Please, please, let Luigi know the elusive teenager.
After what seemed like an age of tough negotiations and promises that he wouldn’t be reported to Health and Safety Luigi finally gave Millie the name of the witness she had been searching for. She placed the receiver down and leant back on her chair feeling proud of herself. “Renato Marchetti I got ya!”
“You all done then?” A mixture of beer and cigarettes wafted over her shoulder, Max was back, perfect timing.
“Yes Guv, the lad we were looking for is called Renato Marchetti. I spoke to his father, he’s bringing him to the station now so we can get a statement from him. I tracked him down with a little help from the new DC,.”
“New DC? He phoned in sick, didn’t Nate pass on the message?” Tony Stamp butted in as he made his way into the office with a pile of ‘missing people’ folders balancing precariously between his hands and his chin topped with a canteen cheese and pickle sandwich.
“I wondered where he had got too, thanks Tony. New DC indeed" Max turned his attention to Millie."have you been in the evidence cupboard enjoying the contraband gin? So who did help you?”
“I think she said her name was Vivienne.”
“I don’t know of any Vivienne. You haven’t had the cleaner working on a job have you? The DI frowns upon work practises like that you know. Although if it’s that new blonde cleaner…” Millie wanted to slap Max he could be so cruel at times.
“No she was a tall lady, short brown hair said she was Italian. You might have passed her Tony she said she’d gone for a wander around the station muttered seeing if June was about.” What was wrong with these men, this was exasperating! “She said she’s worked here before.” Millie added hoping something she said would ring a bell.
“What’s her last name Millie?” Thank goodness for Tony Stamp he’d been there forever, it wouldn’t have surprised Millie if they had built up the station around him. If anyone would know who she was it would be Tony.
“She said it was Martella. That’s it I remember now she was called Viv Martella.”
There was a crash as all the folders fell from Tony’s hands, paper work, bread and files scattered across the carpet.
“Viv! No! It can’t be! It must be fourteen no, fifteen years ago when she worked in this very office. I remember the day as if it were yesterday. She was late for work, missed a briefing so she drew the short straw and came out on patrol with me. I was with her when she was shot, dead.”
