The Bill Dave Quinnan’s Near Death Experience “Oi Janie !” shouted one of the yobs from the Jasmine Allen estate as he stood in the doorway of her trashed flat and threw a bag of rubbish into the doorway then ran off. “Oi, wait !” shouted Quinnan as he chased him along the maze of balconies on the flats and up the stairs shouting another warning. “Stop you little git ! Wait !” while grabbing a handrail and skating on the level of a stair. The maze of balconies eventually led to the Jasmine Allen youth club where Quinnan chased the yob in to the dark youth club , not hearing the door being slammed shut by another yob.The yob had a bat which he was hitting in his hand. “Don’t be stupid, put that down.” said Quinnan to the yob. The yob threw away the baseball bat. “Come on then, come and get me.” he said to Quinnan. Quinnan went and grabbed him by the upper body and chest. “What you playing at ?” Quinnan said to the yob. Just then, Quinnan heard some oohing noises. “What’s going on ?” he said. “Who’s there ?” he asked again. The lights went on as one of the youths went “Oi !” Dave the noticed he was surrounded by a gang of youths holding different home made weapons . Dave radioed for help. “Sierra Oscar from 340. Urgent assistance. Jasmine Allen youth club. There’s about fifteen of them down here.” Dave tried reasoning with them by saying “This is no concern of yours so just back of, yeah ?” “Let him go !” said another one of the youths referring to the yob Dave was holding. A can was thrown at Dave and Dave saw no choice but to let him go. The youths started pushing Dave around. “Guys, don’t be so stupid.” said Dave to no effect. “Right” said Dave, getting back on the radio. “Sierra Oscar from 340. Urgent assistance required o the Jasmine Allen youth club, I repeat, aaarghhh….” just then one of the youths lunged forward and punched Dave in the stomach, sending him to the ground where all the other youths started kicking him. The last thing Dave remembered was pressing the panic button on his radio before losing consciousness. What happened next, Dave cannot explain. He hasn’t told any of his mates either in case they ridiculed him. Dave can quite clearly remember looking down on him-self and seeing all the youths kicking his lifeless body then George Garfield smashing him-self through one of the youth club windows and the youths scattering as George came in the youth centre and him just staring at Dave’s lifeless body. Then Dave’s other colleagues coming into the youth club then going off to find the youths that did this. Dave then remembers a strange sensation of being pulled even further up away from his body then seeing a long tunnel with a bright light at the end of it. He then, not walked, but floated, along the tunnel towards the light. When he came out at the other end he saw P.C. Pete Ramsey, P.C. Ken Melvin, P.C. Phil Young, W.D.C. Viv Martella, W.P.C. Cathy Marshall and W.D.S. Jo Morgan - the six Sun Hill officers who had all died in previous years. Was this what death was like ? Viv then approached Dave, put her arm around him and, with her comforting smile, said “So what’s happened to you Dave ?” Dave was lost for words. Here was an old colleague of his who had had been shot dead five years ago talking to him. “Eh, ahem….” was all Dave could say. He looked behind him back down the tunnel and could see the paramedics working on him in the back of the ambulance and a concerned Polly Page watching what was going on and giving words of comfort to him. One of the paramedics then said “He’s arrested” and got the deflibrator out at which point the far end of the tunnel closed up. “No !” screamed Dave “I don’t want to die !” A few minutes later the far end of the tunnel re-opened and Dave could see him-self being rushed into the casualty entrance of St. Hughes hospital and into the resus area while Polly looked on worriedly. Dave was really worried and said to his six dead colleagues that he didn’t want to die yet. Viv came up to him , put her arm around him again and said “It’s up to you which path you choose - whether you stay up here with us or down there with them.” Dave then asked the rest of his Sun Hill colleagues (including Ramsey who had died before Quinnan had joined Sun Hill) how they felt when they had died. Ramsey said he was annoyed that Tosh hadn’t taken any notice to Ackland when she had warned him that the bank robbers had guns but realised how he must’ve felt knowing his family were among the hostages. He told Dave he was just doing his job trying to stop Tosh from going into the bank. Melvin said, with him becoming a Born-again Christian, he accepted what was going to happen. Dave then came to Phil Young. Dave remembered the afternoon when him and Steve Loxton found Phil’s body in his exhaust -fumed filled car. Phil explained to Dave how he was very unhappy and at his lowest point then and, after he had taken his own life, felt at peace with him-self. When Dave explained how shocked the relief were when Viv died, Viv said she didn’t have time to think about how she felt as her death was very sudden. Cathy Marshall explained how when she slipped off the jetty into the river Thames whilst chasing the burglary suspect, she just remembered being pulled under by a strong darkness and the feeling of not being able to breathe then darkness then the bright light Dave had experience. Finally, Jo explained she was glad she had prevented June Ackland from dying at the hands of her sniper. Again, Viv came up to Dave and said “It’s up to you what you do.” Dave looked at all six of his dead Sun Hill colleagues, cuddled each one of them, said “Sorry and I’ll miss you.” then floated back down the tunnel. He looked behind as the bright light shut behind him. The next thing Dave remembers was waking up in the dimly lit I.T.U. ward of St. Hughes hospital, struggling to breathe as he had a tube down his throat. The next few days were a blur but Dave remembers being taken down to an observation ward where one of the nurses helping to look after him was a rather attractive Irish nurse with jet black hair…… Paul Honey is a Babe

A great story Paul, very well done. I'm very glad to read that Dave didn't want to stay in the great police station in the sky, think of all those storylines that we would have missed out on! Thank you for sharing this Paul, I really enjoyed reading it.

Cheers. I just thought it was a different perspective to this storyline as you could see what was happening from the officers but not from Dave's point of view. |

It was a sweet memorial to Sun Hill's fallen. I think this run of episodes were the last I watched regularly. I was sad to give The Bill up for a while, but it wasn't the show I loved. I started watching it again in its last year and it was fantastic. It should never have been axed. Love this, I really do. Trystan |
