Currently (as we speak as a matter of fact) in Melbourne Australia, network 7, Daniel McPherson is enthusiastically hosting a special on the 50th anniversary screening of the legendary Australian police drama 'Homicide'.

For those who are not familiar with Homicide, it was the first locally produced police drama.. actually it was the first locally produced drama full stop, and was the first program to be sold to the United Kingdom from Australia.

It told the story of police and detectives from a realistic point of view, revolutionary for day. It was not shy to show crimes, criminals and domestic situations as they really are and many of the story lines were based on actual cases.

In that it could almost be said if it were not for shows such as Homicide, a program such as The Bill may have taken a lot longer to reach our screens.

If you ever get the chance, I would highly recommend taking a look at how gritty police drama was done - 50 years ago :police2:

Oh wow! 50 years that is quite an achievement! :bravo:

Not only was Homicide the first local police drama it must have been one of the wolds first police series out there.

I think I am going to have to pay a visit to youtube shortly to see if I can catch an episode or two.

Is the show still running?

The show ran from 1964 to 1977 and was one of the programs that saw the transition from black and white, to colour television. Regular daytime repeat screenings began in the early 1970s, running until the early 1980s.

It received unprecedented support from the Victorian Police, who even staged a full honours funeral for filming when one of the main characters was killed off.

Homicide ran for 12 years and 6 months, making it the longest-running Australian weekly primetime drama in history.
With 510 episodes produced, for many years it held the record for most episodes produced in an Australian weekly primetime drama. When it ended in 2006, Blue Heelers equalled this record. However "Homicide" ran on-air for longer than "Blue Heelers" and had a greater cumulative running time due to five "feature-length" episodes.

Daniel starred in what was a tribute show of sorts to the original Homicide, 'City Homicide'

Homicide has been released on DVD since December 2012 and more recently available from the Crawford's online store; but if you haven't won the lottery lately, some episodes can be viewed on youtube (search 'homicide tv series australia').

:update: thanks, I googled Homicide and well you could imagine the things that popped up. :runforthehills Unfortunately it seems that I will have to catch the episodes on Youtube, I'm still waiting for that lottery win!!

Its good to see that programmes like this are still celebrated even after it has finished as I am sure it holds great fondness in several generations.

And speaking of Bluehealers - I loved that show it was another good reason to feel ill on a school day
