I hope you feel better soon. No fun reading on a computer with a headache.

PART 17

Statement by James Thompson. Taken at Sun Hill Police Station 21:00 15th November 1992:

I hang around with Lee Parish and Rory Baker from the Jasmine Allen. About three weeks ago, we tossed about the idea of doing a robbery of some sort, just for a bit of a laugh and a bit of cash. It was Lee who came up with the idea of a jewellery shop. His cousin knew the girl that worked in there with Mr Edwards and she happened to mention that he opened the store by himself in the mornings. She wasn’t involved or anything, it was just an off hand comment. Anyway, we picked a date and that was it. Early in the morning, I’m not exactly sure of the time; Lee and Rory picked me up from home in a car they’d nicked. I was asked to drive, so I did. You don’t ask questions with them pair, you know what I mean? I knew Rory had a baseball bat, but I didn’t know Lee had the gun until he pulled it out just before we went inside to do the job. We didn’t need to threaten the bloke much; he cooperated as soon as he saw the gun. I ran outside first and got the car started. Anyway, we thought we’d got away with it until we came to the two coppers at the broken traffic lights. We didn’t know the lights was broken until we passed the first copper, it was too foggy to see why they were there. I said lets just play it cool and speed past them. If anything, they’d think we was joy riders, nothing more…but Lee…he’s a nutter, he really is! He pulled out the gun as we came around the corner. I didn’t know he was going to shoot, honest! Well that was that, he had to disappear for a bit.
END STATEMENT

“You’re quiet today,” Barry stated, looking at Sophie closely. She returned his gaze. Barry had been moved out of intensive care the day before and was now sitting up in bed. He was improving rapidly. He still got a bit breathless, but that was to be expected for a little while yet while his chest healed. Sophie could tell he was frustrated by it, but he wasn’t complaining…yet.

“Sorry love,” Sophie sighed. Barry brushed some of her hair back over her shoulder.

“Are you ok?”

“Of course. I’ve taken a few days leave.”

“Good, you look tired.”
Sophie nodded. There was a short silence.

“So…they’re letting you leave next week,” she commented.

“Finally!”
Sophie smiled faintly and Barry raised an eyebrow.

“Try not to look too excited there, Soh.”

“Sorry,” Sophie kissed him. She took his hand and held it in both her own in front of her eyes. Barry squeezed her hands and pulled her towards him. Sophie sat along the bed beside him and Barry wrapped his arms around her, kissing the top of her head as she rested it on his shoulder.

“What is it, love?”

“Nothing, just frustrated, I guess.”

“Why?”

“Well…oh, I forgot…someone from CID is coming in today with some mug shots to see if you can identify the shooter. Are you ok with that?”

“Of course.”

“Still, they shouldn’t need to, I identified him for Jim Carver yesterday.”

“I guess they need me to confirm it. I mean, how good a look did you get? The car went past you pretty quickly, didn’t it?”
Sophie stared at Barry, then sighed and again rested her head on his shoulder.

“Yeah, but the guy was hanging out the window and I did see him. I didn’t think I had, but-but when I saw the photo on the incident board in CID…” Sophie trailed off and Barry gave her a squeeze.

"It’s ok, love…it scared me too.”

“I thought I’d lost you,” Sophie whispered. “Down there, on the road and…They had to take your jacket for evidence. I-I couldn’t let it go after we came in to the hospital. I thought…if I let it go I would be letting you go too and-and I couldn’t do that.”

Barry held Sophie as she sobbed quietly. Cathy had been in to visit and had told him of Sophie’s shock after it had happened. He knew Sophie would tell him eventually, but she wouldn’t have done so until he got better. He could understand why, but he wanted to know she was ok too.

“Sorry,” Sophie murmured finally, sitting back. Barry handed her a tissue from the box beside the bed.

“Why? Sophie, we’ve been together for six months and I can’t see us splitting up any time soon. If we can’t cry on each other’s shoulders, then…” he shrugged, lost for words.

“Yeah, thanks love, I know. Actually, that…” Sophie was interrupted by a gentle knock at the door. She and Barry looked up to see DCI Meadows and Jim Carver at the door. Sophie stood, quickly as they entered. Meadows smiled.

“Don’t leave on our account, Sophie. Barry, how are you doing?”

“Getting there, sir. They said I can come home next week.”

“Excellent news. You’re recovering quickly.”

“I always have.”

“Um…I’m just going to get a coffee. Sir…Jim…do you want one?”

“No thanks, Sophie. We’ll get this over and done with quickly and leave you to it,” Meadows replied. Jim smiled at Sophie as she left the room.

“She’s been in a bad way since it happened, hasn’t she?” Barry asked.

“Yeah, but now she knows you’re ok she’ll get better,” Jim returned. “We’ve all missed you, mate.”
Barry smiled faintly.

“I never thought I’d say this, but I’ll be glad to get back to work.”

“How long before you’re back?” Meadows asked.

“They say about a month, then light duties for another month…then back to normal if all is still well.”

“You’ll be fine,” Jim assured him. “Now…about this photo…”

I used to be in a writing group with Avon and co when the old forum was going in the 1990s. Someone suggested I do chapters. I am hopeless at that sort of thing, so the statements seemed to be a good way of separating the scenes a little. I am not great at finishes, so let me know if this doesn't work. Here is the last part :)

PART 18

Transcript of the interview of Lee Parish with regards to the shooting of Constable Barry Stringer on the 14th November 1992. Sun Hill Police Station, 09:08, 23rd November 1992:

DCI Meadows: This is a taped interview with Lee Jason Parish in connection with the armed robbery at JE Jewellery on the fourteenth of November and the subsequent shooting of PC Barry Stringer. Present in the room, DCI Meadows, DS Roach and Lee Parish. Now Lee, I understand you have refused a brief?

Parish: Don’t need one, do I!

DCI Meadows: Well, before we start, I should let you know that we have a statement from one of the boys who was with you on that day, saying that he was on the robbery with you and in the car when the officer was shot. He says that you had the gun and that it was you who shot the officer after the robbery.

Parish: He’s lying. I weren’t there.

DS Roach: Lee, we have the tests back from ballistics and the gun we recovered from this boy’s flat matches the gun used in the shooting. With his statement and these test results, it isn’t going to take us long to put the rest of the puzzle together. Why not do yourself a favour and tell us your version of events? We know you were there, not only from the statement, but several witnesses have described you to a T.

Parish: No comment.

DCI Meadows: Well, there it is, Ted. You know, when they start resorting to the ‘no comment’ line, that only convinces me of their guilt even more.

DS Roach: That’s true, sir. We have convicted so many from the ‘no comment’ interviews. I’m amazed they haven’t learnt their lesson by now.

Parish: Are you two some weird double act or something? You don’t scare me. I weren’t there!

DCI Meadows: Well, that’s ok, Lee. This interview was merely a chance for you to tell your side of the story. We have enough evidence to be able to get a warrant to search your flat anyway.

Parish: Go ahead. You won’t find nothin’.

“I can’t believe you’re coming home tomorrow,” Sophie told Barry. She brushed his hair from his eyes. “It wasn’t so long ago that I thought…”
Barry caught her hands in his and pulled her down so she was sitting on the bed, facing him. He kissed her.

“Sorry, Soh, you’re stuck with me.”

“I’m not sorry at all,” Sophie’s voice was soft.

“What is it?”

“How would you feel if you didn’t have to go back to the section house?”

“What, move in with you, you mean?”

“Ah huh. What do you say?”

“It’s a big step, I…”

“Marry me?” Sophie just came out with it. Barry grinned.

“What?”

“I-I mean, would you think…” Sophie was stopped by a kiss, long and slow. Barry then drew Sophie into a tight embrace. Sophie was happy to hear his heartbeat strong and steady against her ear.

“Yes, Sophie, a thousand times, yes,” Barry buried his face in her hair. Sophie then sat back and looked at him.

“I-I would never have considered marrying anyone this time last year, but-but on that day in the road when-when-“ Sophie drew a deep breath. Barry didn’t speak, just waited for her to finish.

“There was a time when-when I thought I’d never hear your voice again and-and I realised that I couldn’t bear the thought of life without you. I am so glad we met again, Barry. I love you so much.”

“I love you too, Sophie, and there was no way I was going to let a mere bullet keep me away from you.”

“Frank!”
DI Frank Burnside turned from the door to CID. DCI Meadows approached him from the direction of the Chief Super’s office.

“Guv.”

“How did the search go?”

“Nothing!”

“Oh well, it was a long shot.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t want to be the one to tell Sophie Butcher that the bloke who shot her better half might just get away with it.”

“He’s due out of hospital today, isn’t he?”

“I believe so, Guv.”

“We’ll just have to find another way to get him.”

“Oh, Jim Carver’s bringing in Parish’s girlfriend.”

“What for?”

“She got a little over excited during the search and took a pop at Cathy Marshall.”

“Right. Is Cathy ok?”

“She may be small, but she definitely isn’t soft. She’s fine.”

“Who’s this then?” Sergeant Matthew Boyden looked up from the custody desk.

“Lee Parish’s girlfriend, Lisa McBride,” DC Jim Carver answered. “We picked her up when we searched Lee Parish’s flat.”

“Oh?”

“She took a pop at Cathy Marshall during the search. She’s here on two counts though. Assault on police and then there’s this…” Jim placed an ornate antique gold necklace on the desk.

“Very tasty,” Boyden looked up at the young woman standing in front of him. “Bit fancy for the likes of you, isn’t it?”

“It also happens to be on the list of items stolen from the jewellery shop on the fourteenth. It was one of the items in the safe.”

“You can’t prove nothin’. Lee don’t know I nicked it from ‘im when he…” Lisa stopped, biting her lip.

“Lucky Lee doesn’t like his women with brains,” Boyden commented. “Right, full name?”

Extract from the court transcript from Sun Hill Local Court, taken on 13th December 1992:
‘Lee Jason Parish, you have been found guilty of one count of armed robbery and one count of attempted murder. You are sentenced to five years imprisonment for the armed robbery and fifteen years for the attempted murder of PC Barry James Stringer, attached to Sun Hill Police Station…”

Aww I do like a happy ending to a story, thank you so very much for sharing with us, I really enjoyed catching up on each chapter. I won't know what to do with myself when I come on here tomorrow!

Would you like me to remove my comments so that other readers can read through the story as a whole, or I can just leave my comments there - it is up to you what you prefer. :power:

I'm not fused either way. I don't think the comments ruin it, to be honest. It helps with the chapters, but it's up to you as I don't know how it works better on here :)

I have some shorter ones that I did as part of those writing exercises from way back. I'll out the better ones on here if you like. I do have another couple of long ones as well.

Did the ending work? I wrote this over about five years or so... simply because I had no idea how to end it, so I just made it a quick one.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read it and comment. It means a lot. I write all the time, but am never convinced it is good enough.

I shall leave it up then :)

The ending is good and ties all the ends of the storyline together which the reader wants to see. I do a lot of writing also - going by the number of fan fics on here you've probably guessed as much, although now I tend not to write fan fics much any more. I did save a pic on pinterest a while ago which may give you a few ideas for endings for any new writings.

I will look forward to reading any further fics that you would be willing to share with us. :)

Awesome thanks for that. That helps a lot. I think my problem is that I just don't want them to end, not the ones that actually seem to work. I am glad this one did. I'll have to hunt out the others. I thought they were on this laptop, but it seems they aren't. I have some others I can post from here though, again, a bit long. Anyway, glad you liked it :)
