I was the official at the 3rd div singles last night & have to report the turnout was shocking - 8 players representing only 2 teams. The reason the divisional singles were set up was because lower div players complained that they paid the same subs as div 1 players, and were fed up with the same players winning everything and wanted a trophy that they had a reasonable chance of winning. Maybe this was a 1 off - I had apologies from 2 players in my team & I suppose there may be valid excuses from others too, but I can't believe from a roster of 40+ players, only 8 could make it. As Jon, Alan & Pete are looking to take a well earned break from running the league, I want to point out that some teams really need to look at the involvement (or lack of it) that they have in the league. You can't always expect someone else to do everything, it's only fair that the responsibility is shared round (this isn't aimed at 3rd divs teams either, it's true of teams in all divisions). It's the same at meetings, finals nights etc, it's the same few volunteers who do pretty much do everything - there are a lot of players & teams who regularly win money & trophies but never give anything back in terms of helping out the league. Just bear all of this in mind when you find you don't have a league to play in next season! For the record Nathan Beattie played really well (hitting a 180 & a 118 check) and beat me 3-2 in the final. |

Thanks for the update Phil. I have to echo your sentiments, it is an extremely poor turnout given that the cups were put in by special request. We are very fortunate to have been able to find sponsors for the cups, otherwise, the net effect of this would have been a £100 loss of prize money over the rest of the season. |

With my earlier post in mind, can I suggest a rule whereby every team nominates at least one marker/caller for Finals Night - at least that way every team would be represented. Not sure how the logistics of enforcing it would work, bearing in mind there is no scheduled meeting now until the summer AGM, but it's food for thought & there is plenty of time to organise!? What does everyone think? |

Sorry for coming late to this but I have been to a funeral this morning. I have combined the two topics about singles as I think its best to keep it all in one place. Thanks to everyone who made it out to the singles last night. We had great turnouts in D1 and D2, unfortunately not in D3 (more of that later). Congratulations to all the winners and runners up, who were: D1: Winner - Tony Dunscombe Runner Up - Mike Chiswell D2: Winner: Steve Jones Runner Up: Shane Cook D3: Winner - Nathan Beattie Runner Up - Phil Jones Trophies and prize money (made up for the takings of each venue) will be paid on on finals night. I have to admit I'm very disappointed with the turn-out for D3. Phil has summed it up perfectly. The reason the competition was put in place was for the lower divisions and to then find people didn't even turn out for it is disappointing considering the effort that goes into arranging venues, getting sponsorship, printing forms, cutting up paper, and running the night. I feel very sorry for Nathan and Phil who have a prize pot of £16 to share! I should also add my thanks to Kate, Dave and Phil who all offered to run each venue. ![]() D1 was a great night with Tony playing really well all night and totally deserved his win. There were loads of great games with lots of twists! |

I dont think we had a bad game all night they were all close fought in the true spirit of the game, shame about the third division though that was a really poor turnout. This has been known to happen on singles night thou when some venues have alot of players who look at the list and think no sense in going as i have no chance, thats not the spirit of the game. |
