I hope I'm not the only one on the planet getting the Jones with no Greco going on.

One of the wrestlers hit a awesome throw in fooball tonight. little defence of safety got blown back by this O-line end.........170 pounder and our lil 112 pound safety launched him in a over under.
I yelled FIIIIIIIIVE! The play was on the other side of the field as this big kid thought he would prove a point...............big kid never came after him the rest of the game.

The other coach shook his head and yelled up to me ........"only you unit would want that scored in a football game"

Several 3 point double legs as well...........

I don't know how it worked out for all the other clubs last year, but we really struggled transitioning kids over to Greco/Freestyle....This is really heart breaking to me as I have really grown to loving both disciplines, but it just looks like our kids are just too beat up by the length of the Folkstyle season. We went from having 48 kids in the Folkstyle State tourney to 7 at the Freestyle/Greco shin dig. Several of our kids went to Nationals as well, so two weeks of Freestyle/Greco and suddenly we are in the State tourney.

I would appreciate any open dialogue on what other clubs and MN/USA are doing.

In your post you said exactly what I think the reason is and I'm not sure there's much of an answer to it. You said the length of the folkstyle season. Unfortunately for many (not all) kids the only answer is a shorter folkstyle season as a way of keeping them wanting to be on the mats through the FS/GR season.

Keep in mind that for many of these kids, their "season" is longer than a college or HS season. Now when you're talking about HS or college kids, the idea of them wrestling 9 months out of the year is completely different because in most cases the kids themselves are making the decision to be wrestling that much and it's because they love it. But how many 8 year olds are really making the decision on when/where they wrestle?

Metcalf was content to lose I guess.

Wouldn't the easy solution be to move the MN/USA National tournament up earlier so kids could get a couple more weeks exposure to each discipline? I don't think its because they don't want to wrestle, its just that there are distinct differences between all three types of wrestling.

It's not the MN/USA National tournament...it's the USA National Tournament. Meaning when they schedule it is pretty much out of our hands. But if they were to move it up there would be other conflicts with things like HS state tournaments and all the college national tournaments.

Next years MN/USA State FS & GR tournaments have been pushed back a couple weeks so the kids do get more exposure but the long folkstyle season you mention is going to be just as long.

XHockeydad,
I totally agree with your post; the same problem occured with our club
keeping kids out; and for some, even getting them to even come out for FS/Gr
season in the first place- sometimes the kids were kinda burnt out, but more
often, it was the PARENTS who were just way too tired to keep going :(

by having USA Folk Nationals when it is, that allows the SB/Cadet aged kids to earn a Triple Crown -
but if they move it a lot earlier, due to their
varsity seasons, those age groups could have match count issues -
so, unless USA decides to do away with "waiting" for the HS season to be over-
- I don't know if there's any way it will change -

Nice story, Unit

I really like the 2009/2010 Mn/USA schedule. By moving the greco/freestyle state back a couple of weeks, it will give our club six full weeks to train for those state tournaments after USA folkstyle nationals. It will also allow us to really concentrate on folkstyle nationals, as that has turned into one of the premiere national folkstyle tournaments in the U.S.
Anyone that hasn't been down to USA folkstyle nationals that thinks their kid is pretty tough really should try that tournament. It is held in the UNIDome and they have close to 30 full sized mats going all at the same time with age groups all the way from the youngest wrestlers up to the veterans division. Last year Tommy wrestled kids from Florida, Wyoming, Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Missouri and Illinois.

I just love the "Summer Fun" season.

We'll have to juggle H.S. Baseball next year but that will be solved over a few bags of sun flower seeds.

Never fails in a football game some kid gets a throw in and it happened yesterday.
Line backer for our team, wrestler, 7th grader and a little guy.
Big O-tackle got the best of him a took him 10 yards down field so everyone seen this little guy getting crushed(kept his feet under him)........and then, you know it....he slips in a underhook....POW!
110 pound Linebacker lets this 200 plus pound kid know what it is like to be on the moon for 1 second
I watched the next several plays and that big boy would make contact and push him about a foot and stop.

They got a 11 yard run on the first play then it was nothing over 5 then on.

just a little greco on the brain

Breaking their will young is the key to maintaining that edge on the mat, well beyond the time you actually should be able to. Its like the baby elephant. When they are young they are chained to a post, they pull and pull, but learn they can not get away, then when they are older the handler only needs to tie a rope around their leg, and they don't need to attach it to any thing on the other end. The elephant wont even try to get away.
