Yeah, yeah...I know we all know these things...But we all still have to think about it. Always. Especially if we want to play with guns. Even I have to re qualify.

And I ain't just posting this because everyone is young either. Y'all are some of the smartest folks out there, and I'm impressed. But even the military/police manage to shoot each other/themselves by accident, so if they can...

It just takes a split sencond to send a bullet somewhere, and no matter what, you can never undo it. So...just bear these in mind. We all need to.

1) TREAT EVERY GUN AS IF IT IS LOADED, ALWAYS.

Yep, it doesn't matter if you know you unloaded it a while ago, or last night, or whatever. Treat it with respect as if it IS loaded.

2) POINT IN A SAFE DIRECTION

None of us would ever point a gun dangerously on purpose...But if you aren't paying attention for just a second...it could end up pointed at something or someone you really don't wanna put holes in. It takes constant attention on what you are doing to prevent this.

3) STORE SAFELY

Another obvious one...Don't leave em unwatched where the wrong people, like a child, etc could end up with them.

Such a no-brainer eh? But it still happens. People do dumb crap like leave their baby in the bath, forget a stove is on, leave a gun unwatched or in the open or unlocked...

4) IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT DOES...

Don't mess with it.

5) READ THE BARREL/AMMO

The barrel of a gun will say what kind of ammo it takes. The bottom of a bullet has the same writing. Never use ammo a gun is not designed for, and always double check. I've grabbed a handful of bullets and found out one of em didn't belong there, even though it looked a lot like the others at a glance. It happens.

6) IF YOU FIND A GUN, TELL SOMEONE!

Don't mess with it. Even if you mean well, like to unload it and make it safe...Just don't. Tell someone instead.

7) EYE AND EAR PROTECTION ALWAYS

Wear shooting glasses and earmuffs...They sell em for a reason.

8) THE BIG ONE.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SHOOTING AT AND WHAT IS BEHIND IT!!!

Stuff like rocks, flat ground, water and things like that can deflect a bullet. I've heard it...ZING! Where did that go? So don't shoot at them.

Know what is behind what you are shooting at. Like say a big pile of sand. Is there a road that goes back there? could people be walking on it? If so...Don't shoot.

Is this thick enough to stop bullets? If ya don't know for SURE don't shoot.

It takes all of these things to handle and use a gun safely. Don't let it be intimidating. Stop and think about how many rules and safety obligations you have when you drive a car. Lots more. And no one looks at cars as being so dangerous they should be illegal, do they?

Yet they kill thousands every year.

THere's no reason they should...or that guns should. It's just up to us.

Safe shooting!!

You're welcome. We can all use a reminder every now and then.

I actually forgot two things I wanted to say.

Never trust your safety...yeah, it works but it's a machine and machines fail. You should never have to rely on it.

Finger OFF of the trigger and OUT of the trigger guard unless you're actually shooting.

Best way to remember it is just to do it. I forgot how many times they say you have to do something for it to become an automatic habit, but it's true. After a while, it will just be natural for ya.

Ah, they have a height requirement for firemen there? That's too bad man, sorry to hear that. I was almost an airborne forest fireman last year but I blew my weigh in, they like smaller guys. I passed my physical with flying colors, but was too heavy.

Good way of keeping the finger outta the trigger is just to stick your finger straight out against the side of the gun. That way it's pretty quick to get on the trigger if ya need to.
