Little list of things that are wonderful to have, that I'll be adding to bit by bit. Halizone tablets. These purify water. Read the directions carefully. Typically you drop one in a canteen, shake it up, and wait half an hour and that water you took from the stream is drinkable now, without giving you any hitch hikers or making you barf. Well, the taste of Halizone might make you barf though. So Kool Aid is important here. or Gatorade powder. Gatorade and teeth are kinda not talkin to each other though. Brush em. Waterproof matches. Common sense eh? But here's a trick if ya don't have the waterproof ones when something happens. Light a candle, wait for some hot wax to pool up, and dip the match head in the wax. Pull it out and you got yourself a waterproof match when the wax hardens. Be very careful playing with matches and fire. Read my burn section again. Rope Always handy... Knife A good one. Worth it's weight in gold. First Aid Kit Compass and preferably a map. Use land marks to keep your bearings. As in, point the compass at a church tower, etc, draw a line on the map, works a lot better than just a compass or just a map. Move to that object, shoot a bearing to the next one. If anyone wants more detail, I can come up with it. Warm clothes and a good jacket, preferably with spares. You lose so much heat from wet cotton/denim (read:jeans) that it isn't even funny, and remember that head, hands and feet are responsible for well over 50% of heat loss. More to come. |

Oh, heck...the matches ya take care of now, not when you NEED them. I keep a bundle of em, or waterproofs...whichever. The waterproofs are hard to light though, you gotta scrape em til ya kill em almost. When they work though, they work! Speakin of cadles, emergency candles rock. They throw a lot of heat. You can even cook with them. Some burn for up to 120 hours in a can. And they hardly take up any space. Did anyone know you can use a regular old wrist watch as a compass if ya have to? Yup, it'll work. Not the best but ya use what ya got. Here's how ya do it. Lay the watch in the palm of your hand, with the 12 pointing as straight to the left as possible. Move your arm so that the hour hand points at the sun. Halfway between the 12 and the hour hand is south. (This works only with standard time, and in the Northern hemisphere). |
